Excellent guide. - Our very informative Austrian tour guide gave us a brief history of prospecting and then we proceeded inside to see the wonderful exhibits and the very large, legal tender coin. Next was a demonstration of making a gold bar, again with an interesting talk. We ended the tour with a chance to 'lift' a heavy bar of gold, and failed miserably!!!!! The gift shops catered for all , with a varied price range. All in all, a good trip .

A wonderful piece of Perth’s history and fully accessible for the solo wheelchair traveler. - As a paraplegic and full time wheelchair user I phoned first to check accessibility. “Kelly” on reception assured me that the mint was fully accessible and booked me on an afternoon Gold Tour. I’m a small time numismatist and love history so this was a delight. Our tour guide Paul was a really good orator, had a good sense of humor and was clearly enthusiastic about his job. We learned about the history of the W.A. gold rush, the construction of the mint (completed in 1899) and many more interesting facts before going in to meet Fred who extracted from the furnace a crucible of molten liquid gold and poured it into a mould, making a 6kg gold bar. We were then free to wander around the museum, attempt to lift a real gold bar, see the largest gold bullion coin (literally weighing a ton!) and finally to press our own blank, making a wonderful souvenir coin to remind us of our visit; this year is the 125th anniversary of the mint and this was depicted on the coin. The accessible toilets were excellent and the gift shop extremely tempting. I saw Kelly on reception on the way out and told her how much I’d enjoyed my visit - such a warm and personable lady and like the other staff I met, an excellent ambassador for this superb bit of Western Australia’s history. So well worth a visit.
