A Hidden Gem in Jamaica

As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for unique experiences that can bring families closer together. Our recent adventure to Mayfield Falls in Pennycooke, Jamaica, was just that—a hidden gem that offered a refreshing escape from the usual tourist spots. Having visited Jamaica several times, we were eager to explore something different, and Mayfield Falls was the perfect choice.

We arrived at the falls around 10:30 in the morning, and to our delight, we had the place almost entirely to ourselves. The tranquility of the surroundings was a welcome change from the bustling tourist attractions we had visited in the past. Our guide, Ian, was a true gem, customizing the tour to suit our group, which included seniors and our young child. His enthusiasm and knowledge made the experience both fun and educational.

The falls themselves were breathtaking, with 21 natural pools and several mini waterfalls to explore. The highlight was the famous “Washing Machine” pool, where the water swirled around us in a natural whirlpool. It was a magical experience that left us all in awe.

Tips for a Smooth Adventure

The rocks can be slippery, and having the right footwear made all the difference. We also wore our swimsuits under our clothes, as the changing facilities were limited to just a basic bathroom.

For families with young children, I recommend bringing floaties or swim vests. The water can be quite strong in some areas, and while our 3-year-old was carried most of the way, having a floatation device would have provided extra peace of mind. It’s also essential to be hands-free, so leave the sunglasses and hats behind, as you’ll need your hands for balance.

One thing I wish I had brought was a waterproof phone case. The photographer on-site was excellent, but the cost of photos was steep, and they only provided them on a CD. With technology moving away from CDs, it would have been more convenient to capture our own memories.

After our invigorating tour, we enjoyed a delicious lunch of brown stew chicken and fish with rice and peas. The meal was cooked to order and provided a delightful taste of authentic Jamaican cuisine. It was the perfect way to end our adventure, sitting together as a family and reflecting on the day’s experiences.

One thing to note is the steep stairs leading to the falls. While they added a sense of adventure, they could be challenging for those with mobility issues. Wearing sneakers helped with traction, but it’s something to consider if you’re planning a visit.
