Arrival at Paro International Airport & Paro Sightseeing (2200m)
Kyichu Lhakhang - Upon arriving at Paro, Bhutan’s sole International Airport, the guide and driver will warmly welcome and accompany you on your initial exploration of the ‘Kingdom of Thunder Dragon’.
As a favorable start, the journey begins with a visit to Kyichu Lhakhang, a short drive from Paro’s main town. Kyichu Lhakhang is among Bhutan’s oldest monasteries, believed to have been constructed in 659 A.D. by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo as part of his mission to build 108 temples across the Himalayas to subdue a demoness hindering Buddhism’s spread.
National Museum of Bhutan འབྲུག་གི་འགྲེམས་སྟོན་ཁང་། - Situated above the Rinpung Dzong in Paro, the National Museum of Bhutan was founded in 1968. It resides in the ancient Paro Ta Dzong watchtower, built in 1649. The museum showcases numerous ancient Bhutanese artifacts and artworks, including traditional costumes, armor, weaponry, and handcrafted daily life tools. The collection offers a glimpse into the country’s rich cultural heritage. Following this, a visit to Paro Dzong is planned.
Rinpung Dzong - Constructed by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel in 1646, Paro Rinpung Dzong (meaning “fortress of the heap of jewels”) serves as the administrative and monastic hub of the western region. Currently, it houses the Paro district governor’s office and the district monk body. The renowned Paro Tsechu festival is celebrated here annually from the eleventh to the fifteenth day of the second month of the Bhutanese lunar calendar (typically March or April). A short walk leads to the traditional wooden cantilever bridge over the Paro river (Pa Chhu) below the Dzong. This roofed bridge, known as Bazam, is built in a traditional style. Enjoy some leisure time in Paro town before heading to Paro Village View Homestay for an overnight stay.
Acclimatization Hike to Taktsang Monastery / Transfer to Thimphu (2334m)
Paro Taktsang - After breakfast, travel to Ramthangka, the base of Taktsang Monastery. Perched on an 800-meter rock cliff in Paro, Taktsang Monastery is Bhutan’s most famous tourist site.
The trail, mostly shaded by pine trees, takes about 2 hours to reach the monastery from the road. After an hour of steep hiking, a cafeteria offers stunning views of Taktsang Monastery and the valley below. Horse rides are available for approximately USD20 up to the midpoint (Taktsang View Point Cafeteria), but the trek is best experienced on foot.
After lunch at the Taktsang Cafeteria, descend to the base and drive to Thimphu, the capital city.
Buddha Dordenma - The impressive 169-foot bronze statue of Lord Buddha stands on a hilltop overlooking Thimphu valley. Built to commemorate the Fourth King His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck’s 60th birthday and promote world peace, the statue contains over 100,000 8-inch Buddha statues. Construction began in 2006 and concluded in 2015. Enjoy leisure time exploring Thimphu town.
Thimphu / Return to Paro (2200m)
National Memorial Chorten - After breakfast, visit the National Memorial Chorten, a Buddhist Stupa built in 1974 in memory of the Late Third King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, who passed in 1972. People from all walks of life come here to pray and circumambulate, offering a chance to observe Bhutanese devotion to daily prayers and the teachings of Lord Buddha.
Bhutan Postal Museum - Located in the city center within the Bhutan National Bank building, the Bhutan Postal Museum opened in 2015 to showcase Bhutan’s communication and postal system development. For philatelic enthusiasts, the museum offers a fine collection of stamps, First Day Covers, and stamp albums. In October 2017, His Majesty graciously donated rare philatelic and communication items, providing further insight into Bhutan’s postal history. Bhutan’s postal service began in 1962 with a post office in Phuentsholing, near the Indian border.
Visitors can print stamps with their own photos.
National Institute for Zorig Chusum - Established to promote and preserve Bhutan’s thirteen traditional arts and crafts, the National Institute of Zorig Chusum offers Bhutanese youth access to learning these skills. The arts and crafts include Shing Zo (woodwork), Dho Zo (stonework), Par Zo (carving), Lha Zo (painting), Jim Zo (sculpting), Lug Zo (casting), Shag Zo (woodturning), Gar Zo (blacksmith), Troe Zo (ornament making), Tsa Zo (bamboo work), De Zo (paper making), Tsem Zo (tailoring, embroidery, and applique), and Thag Zo (weaving).

Jomolhari Loop Trek is the most popular trekking route in Bhutan. The highlight of this 7-Day trek (Day 4-10) is the spectacular view of Mount Jomolhari from Jomolhari Basecamp (Jangothang) and interacting with semi-nomadic yak herders. Trekkers who want to avoid high passes and high altitude can chose an easier version of the Jomolhari Loop by retracing their steps from Jangothang (see Day 8, 9, 10) while still having the majestic impressions of Mount Jomolhari.
