Highlights
  • Chateau de Chambord - Chambord Chateau is the biggest chateau in the Loire Valley! It has hundreds of delicate spires and a double helix staircase that is sure to impress you with its genius design and magnitude. You’ll learn about Chambord with your guide and then have at least an hour of free time to visit it on your own and take amazing souvenir photos..
  • Chateau de Chenonceau - Chenonceau is very unique! Known as the Ladies Chateau as it was owned and built up by, mostly, powerful women, and they left their feminine touch throughout it. You’ll learn about its fascinating history, including why it was built over a river, from your guide then have free time to explore inside and admire the gorgeous decor.
  • Chateau Royal d’Amboise - Amboise Château is one of the oldest Royal castles in France. From its hilltop perch, it has gorgeous views over the untamed Loire River and the charming medieval town of Amboise. You’ll learn all about its torrid history from the guide and then have free time to explore the castle ramparts and take amazing pictures.
  • Chapel of Saint-Hubert - Visit the tomb of the great Leonardo Da Vinci and see where he spent the last 3 years of his life in the service of the French King. No visit to the Loire would be complete without learning about Da Vinci. His architectural genius was very important to the Renaissance Chateau in the Loire. (not always accessible)
  • Amboise - The Medieval town of Amboise will charm you with its plaster and timber-framed houses and tiny winding streets. You’ll enjoy free time for lunch in the beautiful town of Amboise. There are dozens of little restaurants and bakeries for you to choose from. Your lunch is not included in our tour price.
  • Place Michel Debre - While wine is not the focus of this tour before you leave Amboise your guide will take you to a cute little wine shop where you will be given a short wine sample tasting of three different wines. The Loire Valley is known for its production of white wines so you will taste some of them to make your visit to the Loire even more authentic.
  • Chateau De Chaumont Sur Loire - On your way to the Chambord Chateau, we’ll pass by this lovely 1,000-year-old castle and its beautiful flower garden that is along the Loire River. If you ask about it the guide will be happy to share its history with you and, if time permits, stop for a few photos of it as well.

Terrific Tour Guide for Loire Valley - The day spent in the Loire Valley was lovely. Our small group was driven by our terrific tour guide Nicholas- he was extremely knowledgeable and offered great insights/historical facts throughout the tour. We toured 3 castles on a cold/rainy February day-but it was truly enjoyed! Thank you/Merci!

Do it for the chateau tours ... not for the wine tasting - We enjoyed touring these 3 chateaus (castles) more than our tour of Versailles, due to the significantly smaller crowd sizes, access to more rooms (kitchens, chapels, bedrooms, etc.), the ability to tour at a slower pace, and the fact that Versailles had a good bit of construction/repairs going on to be ready for the Olympics. Our guide was very knowledgable about the history of the chateaus and their royal inhabitants. He gave us an overview of the history outside of each chateau and then let us self-tour the buildings. Our favorite was Château de Chenonceau, "the Ladies' Chateau." It's a beautiful setting on the river and the colors are very peaceful and comforting versus the harsher reds, blues and golds in Versailles. Before our 2nd chateau stop, Chateau of Amboise, we visited a local wine shop where we were given a "key card" to taste 4 local wines (from the 8-12 options offered). The wine tasting was one of the main reasons I selected this particular tour, but it was very underwhelming. The setting is in a small store, where you are given a very brief explanation of the wines offered for tasting. The whole thing took about 10-15 minutes. This is the only reason I gave the tour 4 stars instead of 5. As long as you know the wine tasting is just a little bonus and not a highlight, you will completely enjoy the tours of the chateaus and your stop for lunch! After touring the chateau in Amboise, we were given time for lunch. After a Google search, it was clear that Chez Bruno was the best restaurant, and it was! In fact, it was our best meal of our entire trip! Fabulous french onion soup and wonderful, traditional, French cuisine. The only problem is the popularity of this restaurant will potentially make you late for your meet-up, so hustle through the chateau tour (it's the smallest, and my opinion, least interesting of the 3), and head straight to Chez Bruno's! The third Chateau, Chateau de Chambord, is massive! If you don't move swiftly, you will not see all of it and there is a lot to see there. Feel free to pack whatever you need for the day, umbrella, jacket, etc., because you can leave them in the small tour van. You will have a stop going and returning at a gas/convenience store for a break and snacks. The walking is really at your pace, so anyone can do this tour, as long as you do not require assistance.

Great castles - not a tour. - The upsides were the castles were cool. The downsides were that we were expecting guided tours and we got no guided tours of the castles - just time to see it ourselves. The driver was a nice kid - he was training a new employee so he didn’t talk to any of the group throughout the day. He drove a bit wild and my husband got nauseous on the drive. He gave us some tid-bits about the history of the castles from outside, while we were standing in the pouring rain waiting to go undercover. I mean, I wanted to see these castles and I did, but it was definitely not worth the price.

Neither a Castle Tour nor a real Wine Tasting - This is neither a castle tour now wine tasting. Our “guide”, Viktor, was late to the meeting point. The tour operator, Blue Fox, tells you to arrive 15 minutes early (6:45am) yet he was late. At each castle, instead of a tour, he dropped us off at the entrance, and we were on our own without even headsets to learn about the castles. He told us to meet him at the van at a certain time, where he was sleeping. He even waiting until we were back to go gas up at the end of the tour. The wine tasting was a joke. Instead of visiting a winery, we stopped an a corner store where the shop keeper has us “self serve” from a wine vending machine, that poured a tiny sample from four of the most disgusting wines I’ve ever tasted. Not a single person took more than one sip. What’s surprising is that this tour company also does the Burgundy Wine Tour which was excellent and we gave it 5 stars. They need to redesign this tour with a better guide, proper tours of the castles and a proper wine tasting. It’s the Loire Valley, for goodness sake—they should be able to find a real winery to visit.
