The Allure of the Mountains

As a former professor of European history, I have always been drawn to places where the past whispers through the stones and the air is thick with stories. My recent journey to the monasteries of Cyprus was no exception. Nestled in the Troodos Mountains, these spiritual havens offer a unique blend of history, culture, and breathtaking natural beauty.

Although the most revered icons are veiled in red velvet, the opportunity to touch them and view their copies was a profound experience.

The lush greenery and crisp mountain air provided a refreshing contrast to the coastal landscapes of Cyprus, making the trip a feast for the senses.

Our next destination was the renowned Kykkos Monastery, one of the wealthiest and most famous on the island. The golden mosaics and historic frescoes that adorn the monastery are a visual delight, each piece telling a story of devotion and artistry. The optional lunch in the village of Pedoulas was a delightful interlude. The traditional Cypriot buffet, featuring local dishes like souvla and halloumi, was a culinary journey in itself.
