- Reis Magos Fort - The journey begins at the northern banks of the Mandovi River with a visit to Reis Magos Fort. A cultural guide will transport visitors back to a time when this fort was a significant part of the kingdom. Established as a base for the Portuguese army in the 16th century, it later served as a prison for political detainees during Goa’s liberation struggle. After independence, it briefly functioned as a hospital. Visitors will explore two mini-exhibitions on Goa’s Freedom Struggle and its historical past.
- Fort Aguada - The tour continues with a drive to the impressive Fort Aguada, which overlooks the Arabian Sea. Visitors are greeted by massive ramparts and bastions made of laterite stone. A cultural guide will recount the events that took place here during Goa’s liberation from Portuguese rule. The visit includes the renowned Aguada lighthouse, a beacon for ships over the centuries. Historically, it was a station for trade and warships and later housed political prisoners. The tour also covers the sea-level area with gunpowder storage, prisons, barracks, officers’ and chaplains’ quarters, and a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Good Voyage. A highlight is the largest freshwater spring, known as the ‘Mother of Water’ or ‘Mae de Agua’.
- Chapora Fort - The final stop on the Forts of Goa trail is Chapora, a formidable fortress on the banks of the Chapora River, which once divided Portuguese Goa from the Maratha-ruled Goa. A cultural guide will recount significant events that altered Goan history and geography, including the Marathas’ attempt under Chhatrapati Shivaji to liberate Goa from Portuguese control.
This fort is particularly popular among Bollywood fans, having been featured in the hit film ‘Dil Chahta Hai’.
