- SSR Botanic Garden - Officially named the Sir Seewoosagur Botanic Garden, this is one of Mauritius’ top attractions. Situated near Port-Louis in the Pamplemousses district, the garden was originally a private estate established by the French governor of Mauritius almost 300 years ago, and later became the National Botanical Garden of Mauritius.
The garden spans vast acres, and exploring it fully could take over a week. It boasts more than 650 plant species, including the renowned Baobabs, Palmier Bouteille, the impressive Giant Water Lilies, numerous medicinal plants, a large spice garden, and much more.
A highlight of the garden is its collection of 85 different palm tree varieties sourced from around the globe. Additionally, various indigenous plant species are on display.
- Port Louis - Founded in 1735 by French governor Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, Port Louis is the vibrant capital city of Mauritius, located on the Northwest Coast. It serves as the island’s administrative and business hub.
The city is bustling with activity during the day and is rich in cultural and historical sites that are not to be missed. Beyond the central market, which is a key spot for those wanting to connect with the essence of Mauritius, lie numerous historic landmarks, including the Champ de Mars, the oldest racecourse in the southern hemisphere.
- Citadel Fort Adelaide - Closed on Saturdays after 12:00 p.m., Sundays, and Public Holidays.
The historic Citadel Fort, perched about 100 meters high on Petite Montague hill, is a significant historical site in Mauritius. Also known as Adelaide Fort, named after the wife of William II during the British occupation of Port Louis, it offers breathtaking views of the city and the harbor.
Constructed in the early 19th century by Colonel Cunningham to defend the British Army, the fort features Moorish architecture with horseshoe arches and is built from large rectangular blocks.
Now a National Monument, the fort is surrounded by the Caudan Waterfront and the expansive Indian Ocean.
