The tour commences around 09:15 hrs at Camí de la Escollera, facing the Cathedral of Palma. Palma was established on the archaeological ruins of a Talaiotic camp and was subjected to attacks by Vandals during Western Roman Empire’s downfall. It was then reclaimed by the Byzantine Empire and the Moors (renamed as Medina Mayurqa), and finally taken over by James I of Aragon in the 13th century.

Soller, located three kilometres away from the Port, is a charming village on the North East coast of Mallorca and the cultural and commercial hub of Serra de Tramontana. Nestled within a valley enveloped by mountains, affectionately known as ‘el valle de Los Naranjos’ (the valley of orange trees), Soller’s main attraction is its splendid, centrally situated square, the hub of the village, encircled by quaint, cobblestone lanes. Upon reaching Sóller, we’re welcomed by the primary square, ideal for settling down on an alfresco café seat, while enjoying views of the San Bartolomé Church and the Banco de Sóller building.

The Port of Sóller is a stunning natural harbour on the island’s northwest and a magnet for tourists. Coveted by buccaneers, it presents a unique blend of orange blossoms and the salty sea wafting through the air. Both the port and Sóller town are interlinked by a vintage wooden tram, offering a timeless aesthetic as it meanders along the bustling seafront walk.

On October 4, 1913, a historic milestone was achieved with the inaugural journey of the first electric tram line in Mallorca connecting Sóller and Puerto de Sóller. Post the launch of the Palma-Sóller railway line began the construction of the Sóller tram. Pedro Garau was at the helm of this project which laid 4,868 meters of track, including an impressive iron bridge crossing the Torrent Major. While primarily serving passengers, over time, it evolved to transport goods to the port. The Sóller station’s power plant ran on a 65-horsepower combustion engine, powered by a Siemens-Schuckert dynamo producing a 600V direct current.
