Highlights
  • The tour commences around 09:15 hrs at Camí de la Escollera, facing the Cathedral of Palma. Palma was established on the archaeological ruins of a Talaiotic camp and was subjected to attacks by Vandals during Western Roman Empire’s downfall. It was then reclaimed by the Byzantine Empire and the Moors (renamed as Medina Mayurqa), and finally taken over by James I of Aragon in the 13th century.

  • Soller, located three kilometres away from the Port, is a charming village on the North East coast of Mallorca and the cultural and commercial hub of Serra de Tramontana. Nestled within a valley enveloped by mountains, affectionately known as ‘el valle de Los Naranjos’ (the valley of orange trees), Soller’s main attraction is its splendid, centrally situated square, the hub of the village, encircled by quaint, cobblestone lanes. Upon reaching Sóller, we’re welcomed by the primary square, ideal for settling down on an alfresco café seat, while enjoying views of the San Bartolomé Church and the Banco de Sóller building.

  • The Port of Sóller is a stunning natural harbour on the island’s northwest and a magnet for tourists. Coveted by buccaneers, it presents a unique blend of orange blossoms and the salty sea wafting through the air. Both the port and Sóller town are interlinked by a vintage wooden tram, offering a timeless aesthetic as it meanders along the bustling seafront walk.

  • On October 4, 1913, a historic milestone was achieved with the inaugural journey of the first electric tram line in Mallorca connecting Sóller and Puerto de Sóller. Post the launch of the Palma-Sóller railway line began the construction of the Sóller tram. Pedro Garau was at the helm of this project which laid 4,868 meters of track, including an impressive iron bridge crossing the Torrent Major. While primarily serving passengers, over time, it evolved to transport goods to the port. The Sóller station’s power plant ran on a 65-horsepower combustion engine, powered by a Siemens-Schuckert dynamo producing a 600V direct current.

Train was a cool experience - This trip was fantastic! We enjoyed riding the train. It was a wonderful way to experience and see the breathtaking views! I wish that I had known about the "long" tunnel beforehand, just to know it was coming, but I did ok and it was such a cool experience! I would recommend this trip to anyone and I'd definitely go again!

A great experience - The train journey starts in Palma and the seat booking was under control so everyone has a seat. We saw lovely lush Majorca out of the train window, bought a combi ticket with all the delicious food in the harbor and a fantastic drive with lots of mountains, cities and greenery, not the last time.

Fantastic views - This trip to Soller was really memorable. Fantastic views an the ride by tram and the old open-sided train was wunderful. Both tje Port and also the town of Soller were really worth visiting. There was not much time to stroll around because of a tight time schedule but I knew that before the excursion so it did not bother me. I had time to take a quick sim at the beach in Port of Soller and have som really good ice cream. In Soller Town we could walk around the little market in front of the church and through the small charming alleys. There would be no time sitting down at a restaurant but again I was prepared that time was limited. The guide whose name was Virginia spoke several languages including Spanish (of course), Italian, French and English fluently. Her German skills did not seem as well but then again most Germans understand English nowadays so I don’t think this should be a problem. The service was good and i was contacted two days before the trip and informed about the pickup-time at the hotel. The bus was in time and took us to the meeting point where we were to change to a different bus. We got information about the number of the new bus. On our way back you were given the choice to stay in Palma for the rest of the day and make your way back to your hotel on your own or to go back to your hotel directly after the trip from the meeting point. So all in all in all it was a wonderful trip. You can always go back to Soller on your own if you would like to spend more time there.

Bit rushed but we were... - Bit rushed but we were prepared for that so softened the disappointment of not having much time in Port of Soller and Soller which were both wonderful to see.

Good tour, but poor communication about hotel pick up - The tour was well worth it. Great train ride and guide was very knowledgeable. The problem was communication about pick up. The tour offered pick up at my hotel in Palma so thats what we said we would do. I received an email confirming the time and hotel location. On the day of the tour, they did not show up at our hotel. I had our hotel call the local tour operator and they said they had been trying to reach me to say they would not do hotel pick up. I did not get any messages from them about this. Luckily I was able to reschedule the tour in two days, or I would have lost my money. Viatour should not make promises that the local operator can’t deliver on.

The real Majorca - If we promised you a change of scenery in Palma, head on towards Solér. A superb little town that is worth the detour. The train, which is very touristy but worth doing, is a good experience but the journey is enough because the trip is quite expensive. The return by bus is very easy from the port which is also an unmissable place. You can go up to the lighthouse or go up into the village to reach breathtaking views. A real feeling of vacation and freedom. There are a lot of people but nothing unbearable, the prices of restaurants are high in terms of quality. Good holidays !

A nice little tram ride - It is very busy. Cost €64 with the tram ride. Do it on a fine day to appreciate the views. Port de Soller is definitely worth a visit. Nice restaurants and views around the bay from vantage points. We went on a soaking day, got wet, couldn't face the electric tram back and caught the 204 red yellow and white bus from 500m from the marina. Back straight into the subterranean bus station in the centre of Palma. Cost about €4 for two of us. My advice would be if you really fancy it go on the tram but come back in the bus. The pragmatist in me says save your money and go on the bus both ways.
