Highlights
  • Teatro Politeama Garibaldi - The start of our Palermo tour, more than 10 full tastings in three different markets, explorations of local neighborhoods and visits to historic sites, this tour takes in iconic Palermo as well as lesser-known hidden gems.
  • Capo Street Market - At the lively Capo market, we will have a street snack of fried fish and stuffed sardine rolls. In the shadow of a Norman-era Church, where Byzantine and Arab influences come together, we will sample one of the city’s best arancina and panelle.
  • Teatro dell’Opera dei Pupi - Visit to the workshop of one of Palermo’s last puppeteers to see how he brings Sicilian history to life through his craft.
  • Mercato Ballaro - In the Ballarò market, we’ll go from stall to stall as local shoppers do, learning about Sicilian agriculture and sampling local pistachios and other nuts, candied fruits and fresh seasonal fruit juice. No visit to Ballarò would be complete without a bite of stigghiola, grilled lamb intestines, a humble but delicious snack.
  • Mercati di Palermo: Capo, Vucciria e Ballaro - At Vucciria Market, we will have for a glass of minerally white wine from Mount Etna, to accompany a snack of octopus at a local taverna.
  • Antica Gelateria Patricola - The tour ends in the Sicilian fashion, with an artisanal gelato, the sweet finish that unites this city.

Additional Information

The markets of Palermo are sure to captivate you: bright, sunlit alleyways overflowing with vibrant lemons, incredibly smooth ricotta, plentiful capers, and, of course, unique street food. Trade cries echo from the stalls of the Ballarò market as sellers vie for the attention of gastronomes with tables brimming with fresh octopus and sizzling grills filled with offal. Numerous stalls offer a paper cone filled with crunchy fried seafood. Alternatively, indulge in a plate of homemade eggplant caponata dappled with pine nuts and raisins. Should the sight of a thick slab of grilled swordfish not pique your interest, fret not, there could very well be a man on an overturned pail prying open fresh sea urchins just a few steps away.

Amazing day! - This food tour of Palermo was everything I could have hoped for and more. Maria Luisa was an extraordinary guide, knowledgeable in all facets of Palermo and Sicily. She shared the stories of the foods we sampled, history of the areas and buildings we passed, and was a wonderful companion to share the day with. She made recommendations of places to visit based on the interests I shared and opened the city to me in ways I would have missed but for her. Much thanks!

Fantastic food tour of Palermo - Our tour with Enrica in Palermo was absolutely fantastic! A perfect mix of historical and cultural information giving context to the areas we walked through and the foods we sampled. A well designed tour that covered the various quarters of Palermo in a logical fashion. The focus on supporting long established, local family businesses was a highlight, not to mention the delicious treats we tasted. Enrica was an absolute delight to spend time with and as a local her genuine love of Palermo, deep knowledge of her city and desire to share with us was a perfect start to our stay in her city.

Indispensable activity in Palermo - I have done several Culinary Backstreets tours and this one did NOT disappoint. Our guide Paola was engaging, shared insights from growing up around Palermo, and adapted the tour to the foods that are in season (January is primetime for citrus). Even after reading all the articles on Palermo on the CB website, and looking at their map of essential stops, we still visited places that were in neither and wouldn't have found on our own. For a first-time visitor trying to enjoy the streetfood in Palermo's markets, trying to choose a place where to stop for the more "out there" specialties (stigghiola - sheep intestines - and spleen sandwiches) can be intimidating and make one hesitant. Paola took us to the right spots - so much so that we went back to those stands later on during our trip. The non-food-related stop at a puppet maker's workshop was an unexpected highlight. REALLY recommend this for solo travelers, couples, and families.

A Great Family Experience - Paola was an awesome guide. She showed us not only the amazing food of Palermo, but unique cultural aspects of the city that brought it alive in our eyes. Our two teenagers enjoyed it as much as we did. We generally try to do a food tour in all new cities and this one is going to be the new bar to top for all others! Thank you, I now know a company to go to first.

Highly recommended for foodies - We were guided by Francesca, a very knowledgeable historian and foodie, who was very considerate of our needs. The tour was everything I hoped it would be- going through a couple of open-air markets and some of small shops, tasting a very wide spectrum of dishes. My only quibble was the gelateria, which had interesting flavors, but the quality was nothing special.

Sicilian food that will open your eyes - Our guide, Francesca, was amazing! Our family is of Sicilian heritage and we were delighted to see so many foods that we didn’t know about or know the origins of. More than just the insights to the food itself, she shared knowledge of the city relevant to the markets and the family businesses that created these wonderful flavors! She was also very accommodating to another person in the group who had difficulty walking and adjusted our tour to allow for more sitting while tasting.

A Culinary Journey in the Heart of Palermo - A Culinary backstreets tour the Heart of Palermo The food tour in Palermo was an experience that touched all the senses. Led by Francesca, an expert connoisseur of Sicilian culinary culture, we had the privilege of immersing ourselves in a world of authentic flavors and fascinating traditions. Francesca was born and lives in the neighborhood we visited. A guide at 0 kilometers! The day started with the aroma of an amazing coffee in a picturesque café in the heart of Palermo. And I tasted my first Sicilian cannoli. The walk through the narrow, picturesque streets of Palermo brought us to a local bakery, where we tasted fresh, crunchy and fragrant bread, freshly baked. And then rotisserie products in a small treasure inside a courtyard. And then the open-air markets, an explosion of colors and smells. Sfincione, raw seafood, local products, from pecorino cheese, citrus fruits, olives. It was a sensory journey like no other. I can't find a real moment to be considered the highlight of the tour; the level has always been very high. Francesca hyper concrete, concrete and fast; after 45 minutes we had already seen 3 delicious places that we could never have found on our own. And then the arancina, with its crunchy shell and soft heart, an unforgettable delight. Bread with spleen in the most characteristic place in Palermo. Each stop on this food tour in Palermo was like a page from a culinary book, a story of traditions passed down from generation to generation. Our tour allowed us to savor not only the food, but also the history and culture of Palermo. It was an experience that will remain etched in our hearts and taste buds forever. Thank you Francesca and thank you Culinary Backstreets

A true experience of Palermo Street food! - Great tour with Francesca. She showed us the Palermo food the locals like. Away from the tourist stream, really "back streets". What did we eat? Well, go and see yourself, but be sure, everything was good and tasty. Thanks Francesca.
