The itinerary includes the visit of Monreale, famous for the cathedral with its precious gold mosaics and, then, thanks to a suggestive ride along the route of an old disused railway, the rise up to Santa Cristina Gela to reach the Lake of Piana, an area of naturalistic value entrusted to WWF Italy. After reaching the town of Piana degli Albanesi, you will have the opportunity to visit the Byzantine churches and the characteristic local craft workshops, to later begin the long, scenic descent to Palermo, where we will conclude our excursion but not before having tasted a special cannolo, filled on the spot by a master pastry chef.

Additional Information

An exploration of Albanian culture and language in Sicily

In Palermo province, there are five towns of Albanian heritage and culture, hosting a significant community of over 50,000 individuals. The term ‘Arbëreshë’ refers to the Albanian ethno-linguistic minority that has historically resided in Southern and island regions of Italy. Originating from Albania, along with other numerous Albanian communities in Morea and Ciamuria, these groups established settlements in Italy between the 15th and 18th centuries, following the death of the national hero of Albania, Giorgio Castriota Scanderbeg. Furthermore, the incremental take over of Albania and all Byzantine Empire territories by the Turkish-Ottomans propelled them to migrate. Their culture is defined by specific components, seen in language, religious traditions, customs, iconographic art, cuisine, and fiercely conserved due to their recognition of belonging to a distinct ethnic group.

The Best Cannoli Anywhere - If you think you've had good cannoli, but you've never been to Piana degli Albanesi, then you haven't yet had the best cannoli in the world. This is a fantastic day trip, and should be on everyone's "to-do" list in Palermo. The cycling is not challenging if you are in relatively good shape, and if you are in just decent shape it is still doable. The bikes have an electric assist, the countryside is beautiful, the ride out of Palermo itself is thrilling, and the downhill portions of the afternoon ride are better than any amusement park ever thought about being. Sergio is amazing. His love for people, for Sicily, for hospitality...all just shines through his smile. As my kids said, "He just kept getting cooler and cooler the more we talked with him!" He kept us safe and helped us out every step of the way. A kinder and more generous person you will not find.
