Koh Tao, which translates to \’Turtle Island\’, has emerged as the premier destination for scuba diving in Thailand. Situated within the Chumphon Archipelago along the western coast of the Gulf of Thailand, it is officially a district within Surat Thani Province. Despite its modest size of roughly 21 square kilometers, Koh Tao welcomes over 100,000 visitors annually, making it one of the most frequented tourist locations in Thailand and a top scuba diving spot globally. However, there is growing concern over the impact of diving activities on the coral reefs in the area. Besides diving, Koh Tao is also famous for snorkeling, hiking, rock climbing, and bouldering.
Reaching Koh Tao is quite straightforward via a combination of bus and ferry services. The buses are comfortably equipped with air conditioning and include hotel pickup from various locations. The journey from Krabi to Koh Tao takes about 7-8 hours, with stops at Koh Samui and Koh Phangan along the way. Since Koh Tao lacks an airport, it is dependent on ferry connections from the mainland and neighboring islands.
