The beautifully preserved remnants of Ostia Antica, once Rome’s primary seaport, are situated twenty miles away from the modern city, amidst the hills between the Tiber River and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Ostia Antica, most likely established in the 4th century BC as a military outpost to guard the river’s mouth from naval invasions, served as a bustling trade hub when Rome dominated over the entire Mediterranean in the 2nd century BC. With Rome’s decline, the port was deserted and only inhabited by shepherds and their flocks. The once lively city, home to approximately 60,000 people, offers insights into Roman life with its harbors, warehouses, apartments, houses, stores, bathhouses, and temples. As you meander down Ostia’s main street, the Decumanus Maximus, deep ruts caused by cargo carts transporting goods between Rome and Ostia can be observed. The city is considered to be the second best preserved ancient Roman town after Pompeii.
