Highlights
  • Fram Museum - The main exhibition in the Fram building has explanatory texts in ten languages and describes the three great Fram expeditions.

In June 2013 we inaugurated our new Gjøa building, which is connected to the Fram with an underground tunnel. The centerpiece here is Gjøa, the first ship to navigate the whole of the Northwest Passage. There are brand new historical exhibitions on the expeditions of Gjøa and Maud, of the airplanes N24 and N25 as well as of the airship Norge, John Franklin’s legendary expedition and those of Henry Larsen and Eivind Astrup.

We also present current issues facing the High North such as polar bears, ice melting, gas and oil etc. There is a 116 seats cinema showing a polar introduction movie every fifteen minutes.

Piece of heroic history - It’s a true Fram ship, which you can see from the side and also inside it. Many information about expeditions and their way of life. There are museum passes for 2 or 3 museums (Fram, Kon-Tiki, Maritime Museum) with a reduced price. There is a small cafe on site: coffee, tea, chips, sandwiches, doughnuts and cakes. But in the Fjord cafe (located in the Maritime museum) bigger choice and stock :) ROAD: you can reach the museum by ferry or by bus.

Unique fun! - I spent roughly 2-3 hours here this afternoon and had a wonderful experience. This museum is unlike anything I have ever seen before-- you not only get to see the Fram from multiple angles and levels, but also get to go inside of it and see what life on the ship was truly like! There is also a projector playing varying clips of arctic scenery along the sides of the top of the ship to make you feel as though you're experiencing those conditions-- it was extremely immersive and fun! There are also 3 floors of standard museum exhibits detailing the lives of the ships' captains and crew, the history of the ship, important discoveries from each of its exhibitions, etc. Fram is extremely easy to get to via bus, and is situated on the edge of the fjord, making the building itself picturesque and pleasurable to look at. There is also a wonderful cafe inside that serves waffles with brown cheese that were a wonderful snack to enjoy while marveling at this magnificent ship. There is also a gift shop that has many books and souvenirs available for purchase. This is a unique museum that I truly enjoyed spending an evening exploring-- would highly recommend to anyone visiting Oslo!

Good museum - The museum has an old boat that must be centuries old. But from his time and later, the entire conquest of the poles by human beings is reported in detail and photos.

Absolutely Awesome. - Incredible interesting and extremely well presented. Fascinating and well presented record of all arctic explorations dating from 15th century and the endeavours to find both north west and north east passages. Best thing I’ve seen and of a level with the book presentation of Shackleton endurance. It’s worth visiting Oslo just for this!

Fantastic. - This museum is located on what is known as museum island. The ferry takes you over and its a few minutes walk. To explore and have a little understanding of how treacherous a journey for all involved.

Impressive museum but try and avoid school hours - We used the Oslo Pass for this. The ship is impressively large. Try to avoid going during school hours as kids are running wild with no parents or staff monitoring them. There is a lot of reading available if you are inclined. Recommended

See the movie first - See the movie first. There is a 15 minute movie on the Polar expeditions. View this first before reading all the wall instructions. Well presented and well done museum. Visit time 60 - 90 minutes.

Polar Exploration Museum - The museum is located at the Bygdoy, which is easy to reach by bus or ferry. We chose to take the small ferry from a pier near the City Hall. We visited on a nice and sunny day and enjoyed the short ride with nice views of the city and the fjord. The Fram Museum was opened in 1936 with a later addition of the Gjoa building next to the original structure. Famous Norwegian explorers Amundsen, Nansen and Sverdrup are the stars of the museum. An excellent movie gives good information about the polar expeditions and several exhibits are on show. The historic Fram ship is of course the centerpiece of the museum. In spite of a very interesting history the museum appears slightly dated and I would recommend an update.
