The initial segment of the hike is manageable, with a few minor ascents, as the path leads to the summit of one of the mountains encircling Ollantaytambo.
Throughout the hike, participants can enjoy views of the entire Ollantaytambo area and its Inca structures. In the early stages, the Urubamba River will accompany the journey.
The trek to Inti Punku in Ollantaytambo spans 8.5 kilometers, with an elevation gain of nearly 1,200 meters. Therefore, good physical fitness and prior acclimatization are essential to prevent altitude sickness.
- Ollantaytambo - After covering more than half the distance (6 kilometers), the path reaches the Cachiqata stone quarries, where the ancient Tahuantinsuyu Empire inhabitants sourced materials for their remarkable Inca structures and temples.
Here, visitors can observe some unfinished buildings and objects. It’s a perfect spot to rest and explore the area to uncover its secrets.
- Inti Punku Sun Gate - The hike from the Cachiqata quarries to Inti Punku takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes, with a consistent ascent. One kilometer from the end, the Inti Punku structure becomes visible, providing additional motivation. Along the route, the Inti Punku camp is a popular overnight stop for those wishing to witness the sunrise from the Sun Gate.
Upon reaching the destination, the well-preserved structure and the views of Mount Verónica and the landscape at nearly 3,900 meters above sea level create a magical experience. It’s an ideal location to admire the Inca architecture and capture memorable photographs. Bringing water and snacks is advisable.
The return journey retraces the same path, and due to the continuous descent, the travel time may exceed three hours.
On the descent, a different perspective of the hike is revealed, along with the diverse flora that embellishes the trail.
