These fortifications date back to the 10th century, during the reign of Tsar Samuel, who made Ohrid his capital. Strategic Location: Located on the northern side of the Old Town, the Upper Gate was one of the main entrances to the fortified city. Its elevated position on the hillside offered a strategic advantage, allowing defenders to oversee the surrounding area and control access to the town. Architectural Features: The gate is a sturdy stone structure with a large archway, designed to be strong and imposing, reflecting the military architecture of the time. It also has small openings or embrasures for archers to defend the town.
