- Gorna Porta - Medieval Defense: The Upper Gate is part of the ancient city walls that once surrounded Ohrid, providing protection against invaders. These fortifications date back to the 10th century, during the reign of Tsar Samuel, who made Ohrid his capital. Strategic Location: Located on the northern side of the Old Town, the Upper Gate was one of the main entrances to the fortified city. Its elevated position on the hillside offered a strategic advantage, allowing defenders to oversee the surrounding area and control access to the town. Architectural Features: The gate is a sturdy stone structure with a large archway, designed to be strong and imposing, reflecting the military architecture of the time. It also has small openings or embrasures for archers to defend the town.
- Samoil’s Fortress - Samuil’s Fortress provides panoramic views of Ohrid and its beautiful lake. Walk along the ancient walls and experience the history that has shaped this region. The entry fee is not included (3eu).
- Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon - Plaošnik (St. Clement’s Monastery): A short walk uphill from the theater leads to this significant archaeological site, which includes the rebuilt Church of St. Clement and Panteleimon, where the first Slavic university was founded. (entrance fee not included)
- St. Jovan Kaneo - The Church of St. John at Kaneo, often called “Sveti Jovan Kaneo,” is one of Ohrid’s most iconic landmarks. Situated on a cliff overlooking the serene waters of Lake Ohrid, this small, picturesque church is a prime example of Byzantine architecture.
- Original Ohrid Pearl Filevi - The Filevi family operates their own pearl museum and workshop in Ohrid, where visitors can learn about the history of pearl production in the region, observe the pearl-making process, and purchase authentic Ohrid pearls. This museum is a significant cultural and tourist attraction, reflecting the deep heritage and craftsmanship of the area.
