Additional Information

You’ll acquire new culinary skills that can be easily implemented at home. I had the privilege of growing up learning from the best cooks, my mother and grandmother. Let’s communicate through food. I’ll guide you on how to prepare ingredients at home. In olden days, people made do with limited ingredients and maximized their culinary skills to make the best meals possible. The crux of Macedonian cuisine lies in creating delicious dishes from a handful of ingredients, challenging you to use your creativity to make the tastiest dish from what you have.

A culinary afternoon with a deep insight into Macedonian cuisine. - We were picked up on time and driven to Sonja and her husband's garden house. There we first had a coffee and then started making komat with homemade cottage cheese. It was fun and easy to pull the dough. We didn't know how to make this kind of dough and it was a pleasant surprise. For the main course we made tavce kravce and pindzur. We tried makalo, which we failed at but Sonja said it wasn't very easy either. Our result was still good as a dressing. We ate, drank rakija, wine and smoked together. We told each other lovely stories. A wonderful afternoon. Highly recommended.

For sure the BEST thing you can do in Macedonia! - Sonja’s class was absolutely WONDERFUL! Taking this class was the best part of my 10 day visit of the country. Sonja is a great teacher and she and her family were so kind throughout the whole afternoon. My experience started with Sonja and her mum picking me up in the old town, while her brother starter a fire in the fireplace at the cooking class cottage to warm up in the cold weather. We drank Turkish coffee and I was offered to try their homemade candied cherries and also their elderflower syrup. Apart from learning how to do several Macedonian dishes, I also received answers to all my questions. The meals we made were Komat, Tavce Gravce, Pindzur and Sutliach. Sonja also taught me how to make cottage cheese and upon hearing we don’t have sour milk readily available in our stores she also taught me how to make that :D Her kindness was amazing! She even found a table cloth to use for rolling of the komat dough when she heard I always wanted to try that and never had a chance. The food was DELICIOUS, but what will stay with me is the wonderful time with Sonja and her family. I can’t recommend this class enough!!!

Wonderful meal, great course - After several days in Ohrid, it was so nice to come out of town, to the village of Leskoes, to a beautiful "datsja", as they would say in Russia. After being picked up by Zoran at my hostel, we were greeted by Sonja and her mother Blaguna at the garden. There was also a very friendly and calm, snow white dog in the garden, one of the most charming dogs I've encountered in Macedonia. At the garden table, we were treated with lovely Turkish coffee in the fresh spring sunshine. It was idyllic, I felt as if in a Chekhov play, just with the Balkan Turkish coffee instead of tea from a 19th century Russian silver samovar. The cooking course was enjoyable and a learning experience. Sonja and Blaguna knew how to cook, of course, and how to make us cook, even more importantly. I have never been a great chef, but here I felt involved all the way throughout, and it felt like I mastered it. I even learnt a trick when cooking minced meat and onion, that will be useful for me also when not cooking Sarma. We also made Komat and Kiflicki. All three dishes were spectacular in their making, it feels like being an artist chef when cooking them. Afterwards it was wonderful to eat this dinner, it was delicios, and it was so plentiful too, and we were encouraged to eat to great satisfaction. (I really enjoyed that, especially because I had just been to a winery here that boasted a great lunch with the wine tasting, but from where we yet left the tables a trifle hungry.) It was so nice to be seated at the table in the garden and eat and chitchat with the other guests and with Sonja, Blaguna and Zoran. I also appreciated greatly being treated with wine and even a little taste of the hamlet's very own rakija. The hosts were so knowledgeable about Macedonia, it was so nice to ask random questions about Ohrid and Macedonia. Afterwards, I was dropped off at my hostel in town, whereas the other guests were left at the bus station.

MUST DO IN OHRID! - WOW! What an experience this was. I feel so lucky that I got to do this class with Sonia and I am so excited to go back home and recreate what I learned. We made a traditional pie, pinjur salad, stuffed peppers and rice pudding. I felt so welcomed into Sonia’s home and it was lovely chatting with her and her husband. I even got to meet a couple of their friends. When the food was cooked we all sat down and enjoyed it together over some drinks and laughs. There was so much food! And it was DELICIOUS! The location of the class is beautiful. It was so serene, in my dreams I’d stay there for hours relaxing in the garden with a book. I learned so much about Macedonian culture and heritage whilst we were chatting. I even got to sample the delicious cherry tomatoes and hazelnuts that are grown on the farm. I was very sad when it was time for me to leave to catch my bus to Skopje. The other great thing was that this includes pick up and drop off at your accomodation. Thank you so much for your hospitality Sonia and Zoran. I had a beautiful time!

AMAZING CLASS!! - This cooking class was amazing! I spent half day with Sonia and Daniela, and I could learn a lot about Macedonian food and also history about Macedonia. My favorite part of the cooking was to make the macedonian pie dough and to learn how to do the cheese. AMAZING CLASS!!!
