- Tule Tree - Visit the oldest living Mexican, the Tule Tree, which is over 2000 years old. This remarkable Sabino boasts the widest trunk in the world. Admire its immense size and the whimsical shapes around its trunk while learning about its fascinating history.
- Santiago Matatlán - On the journey, there will be a stop to savor Oaxacan cuisine, renowned for its rich diversity and strong indigenous influences. Traditional ingredients like corn, chili, beans, and cocoa are used in dishes such as moles, tlayudas, tamales, quesillo (Oaxaca cheese), and even chapulines. Oaxacan cuisine, a blend of history, culture, and tradition, is recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
- Zona Arqueológica de Mitla - Mitla is one of Mexico’s most significant pre-Hispanic sites. Its name derives from the Nahuatl “Mictlan,” meaning “place of the dead,” while in Zapotec, it is “Lyobaa,” translating to “resting place.” Unlike other pre-Hispanic cities known for monumental architecture, Mitla is distinguished by its impressive stone grecas, intricate geometric patterns adorning walls and friezes without mortar. This site was a vital Zapotec religious and ceremonial center, associated with the death cult and ancestors.
- Tapetes Teotitlán - Teotitlán del Valle is a Zapotec town renowned for crafting wool mats dyed with natural colors. This textile tradition, passed down through generations, is one of the region’s most iconic. Mats are woven on pedal looms introduced by the Spanish in the 16th century, yet the designs and techniques have pre-Hispanic origins. Artisans use natural dyes from plants and insects, such as indigo for blues, cochineal for reds, and cempasúchil for yellows. Mat designs range from geometric patterns inspired by Mitla’s grecas to depictions of natural elements and modern figures. Each piece is unique and can take weeks or even months to complete, depending on its size and complexity.
