Taller “Tonas y Nahuales” Angelico Jimenez Carrillo - Participants will have the thrilling opportunity to visit the birthplace of alebrijes in San Antonio Arrazola, a village renowned for its rich woodcarving tradition. The visit includes a stop at the workshop of Ángelico Jiménez, a descendant of Manuel Jiménez, the originator of this art form. Here, participants will discover the fascinating process of crafting these vibrant wooden figures and producing natural pigments, a distinctive expression of Oaxacan art. The guide will share the history of alebrijes and tonas, which are representations of the animals that inspire these artworks. Angélico’s workshop features a gallery with an extensive exhibition of pieces in various sizes, all family creations that highlight the artisans’ expertise.

Additionally, the tour includes an in-depth look at alebrijes, one of Oaxaca’s most beloved crafts. Attendees will discover the detailed process behind each piece, from wood carving to the creation of natural pigments and decoration with Zapotec iconography. As a keepsake, participants will learn about their “Tona and Nahual” based on their birth date. For lunch, the group will enjoy a buffet restaurant offering a diverse selection of traditional regional dishes. The tour concludes with a visit to a traditional black pottery workshop in San Bartolo Coyotepec, a cherished Mexican tradition.
