Additional Information

This led expedition presents the perfect opportunity to delve into the origins of an acclaimed author’s life and legacy. Ernest Hemingway was born in a bedroom on the second floor of this place on July 21, 1899. His maternal grandparents constructed this Queen Anne style dwelling in 1890, and it was the first residence in Oak Park to be equipped with electricity. The house’s restoration to its Victorian roots from the 1890s guarantees that the artifacts and narratives you encounter embody the narrative of the young man who resided there.

A step back in time - We really loved this experience. Oak Park town is a very nice town and worth the journey out of Chicago. The tour given by Eric was excellent. I honestly felt I was back in the early 1900s. The house is beautifully restored with artefacts from the period. Eric gave us a great talk and insight into the family. A lovely afternoon out and well worth seeing. Thank you.

Very interesting - Very interesting tour with enough opportunity for questions. Also very Nice to hear more about the debate in the family with their different points of view. Suggestions: Groups no more than 6 or 8

Birthplace of an American author - This was a neat perspective on Hemmingway's early life. There is street parking in the immediate walking area. The cost of an adult ticket is $20 for the docent-guided tour. The docent was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining.

Worth a visit - The tour guide was excellent. We learned so much about the Hemingway family and what may have motivated Ernest to live the life he did. The home is beautifully decorated and is located in a neighborhood with a lot of really neat homes.

Hemmingway is fascinating! - Learning how much Hemingways family, particularly his grandfather, influenced him as a writer. Also understanding the possible causes of his mental illness.

Very interesting tour - Very interesting tour and we learned alot about Hemingway and his family. Our tour guide was excellent and answered all of our questions, including 'is the house haunted?' (No) The society has done a wonderful job of bringing the home back to its original glory days and there are many interesting artifacts throughout the home. The house is in a beautiful area of Oak Park. Free parking was available right on the street and we just walked a short distance to the home. Purchasing tickets online was very easy. We were unable to make the original time we scheduled, and changing the time to a later tour that day was simple, and we received an email confirming the reschedule. Due to horrendous traffic, we were a few minutes late, but they waited for us, as I informed them we were on our way. Much appreciated.

Take this Tour Even If You Are Not a Hemingway Fan - The docent was unbelievably good with a multi-pronged narration to the person called Ernest Hemingway. She was open to all questions and clearly was passionate in her explanation about the family, social circumstances and historical context. I am left with an adjusted understanding of Hemingway who was far more complex than i had previously known.
