Chasing Waterfalls and Colonial Charm in Sri Lanka’s Highlands
Drawn by the allure of Sri Lanka’s highlands, I embarked on a journey from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, where the rain-soaked landscapes and colonial charm offered a unique travel experience. Join me as I explore waterfalls, historic hotels, and spiritual sites in this enchanting region.
A Rainy Drive Through the Highlands
As a digital nomad, I often find myself chasing the sun, but this time, the rain was a welcome companion on my journey through Sri Lanka’s tea country. The drive from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya was nothing short of magical, with the rain adding a mystical touch to the lush green landscapes. The winding roads took us past several waterfalls, each more breathtaking than the last. We made a stop at one particularly massive waterfall, where the mist from the cascading water mingled with the rain, creating a scene straight out of a fairy tale. It was one of those moments that reminded me why I left the corporate world behind—to experience the world in all its raw beauty.
A Night in Bygone Elegance
Our journey led us to the Jetwing St Andrew’s hotel, a charming relic of the British colonial era. Staying here felt like stepping back in time, with its vintage decor and warm hospitality. The hotel was a perfect blend of old-world charm and modern comfort, offering a cozy retreat from the rain outside. As I sipped on a cup of Ceylon tea, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the freedom to explore such unique places. The night was spent sharing travel stories with fellow backpackers, each of us drawn to this highland haven for different reasons but united by our love for adventure.
Exploring the Spiritual Side
The next day, we set out to visit the Seetha Amman Temple, a place steeped in mythology and spirituality. Nestled amidst the verdant hills, the temple is said to be the site where Sita, the wife of Lord Rama, was held captive according to the Ramayana. The temple’s serene atmosphere was a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Nuwara Eliya, offering a moment of reflection and peace. As I wandered through the temple grounds, I felt a deep connection to the stories and traditions that have shaped this land. It was a reminder of the rich cultural tapestry that makes Sri Lanka such a fascinating destination for travelers like me.
