Sailing into the Sunset: A Pirate’s Life in Aruba
When the allure of a pirate ship and a Caribbean sunset called, I couldn’t resist. Join me as I recount my thrilling adventure aboard a pirate schooner, complete with an open bar and a daring rope swing.
Setting Sail on a Pirate’s Dream
The Caribbean sun was beginning its descent as I made my way to MooMba Beach, the starting point for the Pirate Ship Adventure. The anticipation was palpable, and the salty breeze carried whispers of adventure. As a former professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours on the water, but this was different. The promise of a pirate ship, open bar, and a sunset sail was too enticing to resist.
Upon arrival, I was greeted by a lively crew dressed in pirate garb, their enthusiasm infectious. The ship itself was a sight to behold, with its expansive teak decks and towering masts. As we set sail, the open bar came to life, offering a variety of cocktails, including the infamous Pirate’s Punch. I opted for a colada, the perfect companion for the journey ahead.
The ship glided through Aruba’s turquoise waters, the scenery ever-changing and breathtaking. The western coast of Aruba unfolded before us, a canvas painted with the vibrant hues of the setting sun. I found a spot on the deck, toes tapping to the island rhythms, and let the beauty of the moment wash over me.
Diving into Adventure
Our first stop was a sunken wreck, a relic resting 60 feet below the surface. The sea was a bit rough, with 2-3 foot waves, but that only added to the thrill. Equipped with decent snorkeling gear, I joined fellow adventurers in exploring the underwater world. The wreck was partially visible, a ghostly silhouette against the ocean floor.
Reboarding the ship proved to be a challenge, the waves making the metal ladder a formidable opponent. But the crew was ever helpful, ensuring everyone made it back safely. We then sailed to calmer waters, where the visibility improved, and the ocean floor was just 10 feet below. Here, I swam alongside small fish, weaving through ropes and rocks, a serene contrast to the earlier dive.
The highlight of the trip was undoubtedly the rope swing. The crew rigged it over the side, and one by one, we took turns flying into the Caribbean Sea. Even the captain’s young daughter joined in, her fearless spirit a testament to the pirate life. I couldn’t resist the challenge, and with a whoop of joy, I swung out, the ocean rushing up to meet me.
A Pirate’s Farewell
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of pink and gold, we began our journey back. The open bar was still in full swing, and I indulged in another colada, savoring the sweet taste of island life. The captain, a jovial character, offered passengers the chance to steer the ship, a fitting end to our pirate adventure.
The camaraderie on board was infectious, with laughter and stories shared among new friends. The crew’s energy never waned, their antics keeping us entertained until the very end. As we docked, I felt a pang of nostalgia, already missing the pirate ship and its merry band of adventurers.
Reflecting on the experience, I realized that the true magic of the Pirate Ship Adventure lay not just in the stunning scenery or thrilling activities, but in the sense of freedom it inspired. It was a reminder of why I chose this life, a life spent chasing waves and sharing the beauty of the ocean with others. Until the next adventure, may the winds be ever in your favor, and may the pirate’s life call to you as it did to me.
