Exceptional time at Nizwa - I had an amazing time on this tour. I would highly recommend this tour. Nizwa is a beautiful place and the views at Jebel AlAkhder at breathtaking. Our guide Nasr was outstanding. He picked us up on time, gave clear explanations and useful facts. He also helped guide us around the souq so we can buy what we wanted. I hope that I can get the chance to go back to Nizwa but also book another guided trip with Nasr.

From start to finish, throughly enjoyed every minute, highly recommend - Sunshine tours Oman came highly recommended by a family at our hotel, they had previously used them for a Muscat city tour. We used to live in Oman, therefore, we know how tricky the roads can be to navigate in the mountains and during our visit this time we wanted to completely relax with a skilled driver. We were picked up at our hotel for 8am by Saif from Sunshine Tours in their 4 x 4 Toyota Land Cruiser. Immediately he warmed our hearts with his beautiful Omani smile and spirit. We drove onto the highway passing the clock tower a familiar landmark and enroute to Nizwa we visited Fanja a working Omani village. Saif explained that many tourists bypass enroute to Nizwa and the local businesses have declined due to this. He wanted to show us how special the place was and some of the rare, traditional items can be found here. He was so very right! From spices to Omani pots almost everything can be found and the surrounding area is rural, rugged and authentic with a very beautiful mountain back drop. It was well worth the short detour and visiting! We then went onto visit Nizwa fort and the souk there. Saif' historical knowledge of the fort was remarkable and he negotiated well in Arabic with the vendors, some of the items that we also purchased within the souk. This souk was more touristy but still a pleasant experience. Next we visited Jabel Akhdar, from Nizwa the approach was approximately twenty minutes to the Police checkpoint this is where cars are checked for condition and suitability to climb the high gradients onforward. It then takes approximately one hour and a further forty five kilometres to Diana's point which is two thousand and ninety metres above sea level. The roads are new and in excellent condition, however, there are many switch backs and the drive really requires a skilled driver and a well maintained safe vehicle. Saif navigated the roads with skill and precision particularly when passing not so skilled drivers along the way. He gave many tips if driving the route ourselves and how to avoid getting into sticky situations when stuck between two vehicles. There are many emergency run offs through this stretch to take note of should any vehicles get into any difficulty which he advised had occurred but it was thankfully very rare . With the assurance of a skilled driver we were able to completely relax and enjoy the beautiful and breathtaking scenery . When we reached our destination Saif took us to Diana's point and named after Princess Diana, as was the Princess herself with her beauty the location Certainly does justice in memory to her name. This location is also that of the Anantara hotel overlooking the many rose terraces that this area is famous for and with the many fossils set into the rocks. It is a must to see and experience when visiting Oman. We stopped for refreshments at a small cafe and then we made the journey to descend which was equally if not more breathtaking. Saif drove at a moderate speed. We then visited the Falaj Al Katmeen irrigation canals. These canals date back 2000 years and are in themself a feat of engineering. The natural water is highly valued as an essential source of many minerals which is directly captured from the mountains and it cascades freely down, as a sole source to the villages below. There are stone shower cubicles located at this point that allows people the opportunity to bathe privately and soak up the feeling of wellness for a few moments (Take a towel and some foot protection as the stone floors are very hot and slippy ). Next we drove through Birkat Al Mouze, a charming village with many old traditional dwellings with its many hidden gardens of palm trees. It is obvious to see why this location is not so arid as other areas around with it green lush landscape and vegetation. Saif explained this was due to the water from the mountains and explained just how important this resource was for the villagers survival as-well as it being the only source of water . The irrigation system in place system provides a timed system to share with allocated times to take water through a series of valves and a manifold system. It was fascinating and interesting to hear how this manual system worked for this valuable resource that we today mostly in developed countries take for granted. It was a wonderful place to visit that we also from viewed from an elevated viewpoint as Saif took us off-road up a craggy stone road to the most amazing view This was inspiration for a tropical landscape painting with thousands of date palm trees that could be seen everywhere below and all around. We then made our journey back to Muscat and was returned safely back to our hotel that took a further two hours. Our tour took nine hours and we throughly enjoyed every minute from start to finish We truly felt we had received a five star experience and we made another Omani friend. We would without doubt recommend this tour to others
