Exploring Ninh Binh: A Day of Adventure and Serenity

Eager to explore the cinematic landscapes of Ninh Binh, I embarked on a day trip that promised both adventure and cultural immersion. From climbing the Lying Dragon Mountain to rowing down the Tam Coc River, the experience was a perfect blend of history and nature.

A Journey Through Time and Nature

The day began early, with a 7am start to catch the luxury limousine for the two-hour journey to Ninh Binh province. As a solo traveler, I often find myself in the company of fellow adventurers, and this trip was no exception. The small group of 20 people made it easy to connect with others, sharing stories and tips about our travels through Southeast Asia. The ride was comfortable, and the anticipation of exploring a place where ‘Kong: Skull Island’ was filmed added an extra layer of excitement.

Our first stop was the Lying Dragon Mountain, where we ascended 500 steps to reach the summit. The climb was invigorating, and the views were nothing short of breathtaking. At the top, the Lady Buddha statue stood majestically, offering a serene presence amidst the stunning landscape. It was a moment of reflection and awe, a reminder of the beauty that lies in the journey itself.

Stepping Back in Time at Hoa Lu

Next, we visited Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of Vietnam, dating back to the 10th century. This historical site was a treasure trove of culture and architecture. The temple dedicated to the self-proclaimed First King was a highlight, though photos were not allowed inside. The intricate wooden structures and carvings were a testament to the craftsmanship of early Vietnamese artisans.

As a mark of respect, visitors are required to cover bare knees and shoulders before entering the temple. I found myself donning a skirt, a small gesture that added to the authenticity of the experience. Walking through the temple, I felt a deep connection to the past, a sense of stepping back in time to a period of rich history and tradition.

Embracing the Natural Beauty of Ninh Binh

After a delicious lunch featuring local specialties, we embarked on a leisurely bicycle ride around Ninh Binh. The lush green landscape was dotted with water buffaloes and towering limestone formations, creating a picturesque scene that felt like a painting come to life. It was a refreshing break, a chance to immerse myself in the natural beauty of the region.

Our final destination was the Tam Coc River, where we were rowed down the river by a local farmer. The 90-minute journey was a peaceful escape, with the farmer skillfully rowing with his feet, a unique technique that added to the charm of the experience. As we glided along the river, surrounded by towering cliffs and vibrant greenery, I felt a profound sense of tranquility.

The day concluded with a heartfelt thanks to our guide, Mike, whose knowledge and enthusiasm made the trip both informative and enjoyable. As we returned to Hanoi, I reflected on the day’s adventures, grateful for the opportunity to explore such a remarkable part of Vietnam. Ninh Binh had left an indelible mark on my heart, and I knew I would carry these memories with me on my continued journey through Southeast Asia.
