This excursion is a guided saunter through the historic town and port of Newlyn, under the leadership of local archaeologist Jeanette Ratcliffe. Located in the northwestern part of Mount’s Bay and shielded from dominant westerly breezes, Newlyn began as a seasonal fishing hamlet. Following its survival of a Spanish attack in 1595, the town flourished as a hub for the Cornish pilchard fisheries. With the advent of the railway in the 19th century, it expanded to become the most significant fishing port in Cornwall, its economy still largely hinged on fishing today. Notably, Newlyn is also celebrated for the late 19th – early 20th-century Newlyn School of Artists – ‘plein air’ style painters drawn to the town’s stunning natural backdrop and the visually appealing attributes of its inhabitants and urban scenery. The sustained prominence of Newlyn as a leading fishing port and a haven for local artists and art enthusiasts make it a place of distinct charm.
