Highlights
  • Grand Army Plaza - Here we will introduce the Gilded Age and how 5th Avenue became the premier address for Manhattan’s High Society
  • Temple Emanu-El - The largest synagogue in North America. Also, the site of the Mrs. Astor mansion, where an invite meant you were somebody in the New York City upper echelon.
  • Central Park Zoo - An old U.S. military armory and one of few existing structures to be included in Central Park’s design. Here, a zoo began from the exotic pets the wealthy of 5th Avenue would set free in the park as they tired of the novelty.
  • Alice in Wonderland Statue - A fun photo-op to enjoy the recreational and restorative powers of Central Park.
  • Ukrainian Institute of America - A look at the majestic French Gothic revival architecture of C.P.H. Gilbert icon which heavily influenced many mansions through Manhattan and Brooklyn.
  • Neue Galerie - The modern German and Austrian art collection has dramatic stories of Klimpt pieces’ survival as jaw-dropping as any of sagas of the 20th Century.
  • Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum - Andrew Carnegie’s old mansion, for him a garden cottage…
  • Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir - One of the world’s great urban views over one of it’s wealthiest zip codes.
  • The Jewish Museum - The old Warburg Mansion played a critical role in the great events of the 20th Century.

Additional Information

From the inception of the United States, 5th Avenue has been viewed as a prestigious address. However, this perception escalated following the establishment of Central Park, as 5th Avenue transformed into a top-tier locale where prominent figures engaged renowned architects to construct extravagant dwellings. This resulted in a rich history of art, anecdotes, and amusement spanning over a century. These families set the foundation of the American Jewish community.

Our journey begins at the Plaza Hotel situated at the southeast corner of Central Park. We’ll then navigate our way up 5th Avenue, making stops at key points, taking detours into the park, and exploring nearby streets. Our journey culminates at the Jewish Museum (formerly known as the Warburg Mansion), located at the intersection of 92nd Street and 5th Avenue.
