Additional Information

Embark on a 2.5-hour exploration through Midtown Manhattan, uncovering the captivating tales of holdouts—an unexpected byproduct of Manhattan’s cutthroat real estate market: when a property holder defiantly resists a developer’s offer, subsequently altering the developer’s plan, and permanently reshaping the city’s landscape.

Appealing human stories, such as the aging woman who had called nowhere else home; or the poker faced property owner playing his cards too boldly; or the tenant of a restaurant whose long-drawn-out lease required exorbitant costs, present a personal perspective to these remarkable deviations from the norm. These personal narratives, which might have been forgotten, are wonderfully magnified by the enduring physical reminders left behind: seemingly poorly-designed skyscraper entrances, unusually shaped structures, and 20-story deep gaps in office buildings to name a few of the 16 holdout examples we’ll visit.

This tour draws its inspiration from the book, Holdouts! written by Alpern and Durst.

Brilliant!!! Can't wait to get back and see more! - Rob puts the history together in a way that makes all of New York City logical and accessible. Streets I’ve known (or thought I did) and seen a thousand times when I used to live to in New York before I now see in a totally new light. I wish I’d known this information years ago! Brilliant!

What a scam - We showed up 30mins early and our party of 3 talked at the pic in the ad until we realized it was 10mins after our start time and no guide. We tried to call and went on a wild chase only to have the guide text us that he was at Starbucks and didn't see us from the window. That's fine but Viator(owner) would not refund our money. This company is too big and so unable to deal with individual needs or hire professionals that care. There are small family owned tour companies we should use. Why would you bother?
