Highlights
  • Pulitzer Fountain - We will admire this statue, and discuss its history and meaning - and remark on what building had been near it - and the Plaza Hotel next door
  • Central Park - The grandest stage in New York City, Central Park functions as everyone’s front and back lawn, playground, meditation spot - you name it - almost everything has happened here. But it is a product of meticulous design, and now we can enjoy its preservation thanks to the people of the city - its immediate neighbors as well as its occasional visitors. Celebrate the Park!
  • Wollman Rink - We may watch skaters - or children on carnival rides - depending on the season; but we will also discuss it’s colorful and varied history!
  • Bethesda Terrace - The only sculpture in the original design of the Park - and a glorious meeting place for many!
  • Upper East Side - Legendary as the pinnacle of living for the “upper crust,” the Upper East Side is much more varied and storied than that might imply. But, we shall see the Cook Block, and a town house or two of some of estimable wealth, but we will also hear about the history of this neighborhood - for that is what it is: a neighborhood of people and institutions of many from all over the world.
  • New York Society Library - Established in 1754 on Nassau Street, and now in its third location, the Society Library has had some of the most distinguished borrowers this country has ever known - and you’ll learn what it meant to have an overdue book finally returned!
  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art - The largest collection of art in the Western Hemisphere, and second in size only to the Louvre, the Met is a lifetime’s worth of attractions - and the jewel of this neighborhood.
  • Belvedere Castle - After a refreshing walk in the woods (really!), we shall discover the magnificent “folly” of Calvert Vaux - a newly restored “castle” overlooking Turtle Pond - and a magnificent view of the Great Lawn.

A wonderful stroll in Central Park - Our knowledgeable guide Bill prepared a wonderful tour for us. Full of information about Central Park, he made our time in the park very enjoyable. We toured many highlights of the Park, and then strolled the streets of the Upper East Side as Bill shared information about the residences there, and stories of the people who called those places home. Thanks again to Bill for the fascinating tour!

Wonderful tour - Great Guide - Our guide Bill was brilliant. Extremely knowledgeable, friendly and took the time to explain the history of the park and how it has changed over the years. He took us on some paths that would elude most walking in the park and enhanced the experience with personal stories. Also enjoyed his commentary on the mansions/townhomes on the upper east side, some gone and some still with us. Would highly recommend.

More time spent in park rather than upper east side ,but preferred that. Very informative guide , saw things and had them explained wed have not had we have just walked through park without guide. Far too many people on bicycles tours - they certainly missed out as they didn't go to places we did. Being English and not knowing too much American History the Upper East side walking tour was not as interesting that was us not the guide</p>
