The landmark Manhattan Project, which resulted in the creation of the atomic bomb, first took shape in Lower Manhattan around mid-June 1942, when General Leslie Groves set up its inaugural office. In that same year, Dr. Oppenheimer took up the mantle of the project’s chief scientist. With a team of exceptional scientists and engineers, he supervised the building and experimental testing of the first atomic bomb at Los Alamos.
