We commence our journey of 10,000 steps with a panoramic perspective of Harlem’s most frequented boulevard, 125th Street. Our main topics of conversation include the Harlem Renaissance and the phenomenon of gentrification.

We will stroll past and engage in conversation about these renowned locations:

  • Apollo Theater, recognized worldwide
  • Sylvia’s Soul Food Restaurant
  • Langston Hughes’s residence
  • Astor’s Row
  • A number of emblematic murals

Our expedition is rooted in the book authored by me, titled ‘You Are Here: A Geographic History of Enslaved and Free Africans in Manhattan from 1613 to 1865.’ Drawing from my background as a tour guide (having delivered over 500 tours), I will endeavor to make this an entertaining excursion. Best of all, you will gain an authentic Harlem experience—witness the vibrant culture, locals, and landmarks of Harlem.

Great tour of harlem! - It was a great experience learning more about harlem and the details of the harlem Renaissance. Larry was extremely knowledgeable about the history and I truly enjoyed the stops we made and the nuggets of information. My favorite part was the personal connection with the people in the neighborhood and learning about how Langston Hughes left his mark and legacy in harlem. I enjoyed this tour with my sons age 12 and 15. I want to come back with my father who is an avid jazz fan.
