NYC History More People Need to Know About! - I am a native New Yorker & kept hearing about this tour & finally decided to do it. I had no idea this little church held such a big part of NYC’s history! Behind its 200+ year old walls, Marlene, our super smart & thorough guide, taught us the most incredible things about “the Pope’s Church”. Established in 1801 as a cemetery for St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, this landmark went on to become the first Catholic Cathedral of the Archdiocese of New York. After practicing their religion in secret, Catholics, mostly Irish, finally had a place to worship. Anti- Catholic gangs set fires to a lot of structures, including orphanages. If you’ve seen Gangs of New York or the Godfather III, this Church might look familiar. Martin Scorsese went to the Catholic school across the street & attended the church as a child! Apparently comedian, Jim Gaffigan, attends mass here on Sundays. The catacombs beneath the city's first St. Patrick's Cathedral, were built more than 200 years ago. It is the only active cemetery in Manhattan with 33 families, 5 priests, & 2 bishops buried here. The Countess Anna Leary, a Philanthropist & financier, the famous Delmonico Family, & Thomas T. Eckert who was a close personal friend & confidant of President Abraham Lincoln are all buried here. It is such an unassuming structure, mostly because after a fire in 1866, most of the money raised went to build what we know as St Patrick’s Cathedral on 5th Ave & the original Basilica was rebuilt to be more modest. Catholics had outgrown the original space & the new building was constructed near to the Vanderbilt, Carnegie, Morgan, & tycoon mansions to attract them. The Basilica is so important to the history of this great City. I really appreciate the preservation of the building & learning about its importance. Thank you!

Excellent and Memorable - This is a tour of a quirky and unexpected place in NYC, deeply tucked away in Old New York. I found it fascinating and enjoyable. Our tour guide, Marlene, was superlative! She is deeply knowledgeable and interested in the Catacombs of Old St. Patrick’s Church. I found her tour charming and accessible. If you have an interest in quirky and unexpected places, steeped in lore and history, then I hope you will enjoy the Catacombs of Old St. Patrick's Cathedral, just as I did. Not a tour for children or teenagers, unless the teens have an interest in early New York and in thoroughly unique places such as Catacombs.

Amazing experience - Loved it all but was so fascinated by the numbers of unmarked graves in the cemetery. The history is so rich. I’ve been a long fan of The Gangs of New York, this gave me more insight!

Fun and informative tour. - Just got back from a fun, informative and fascinating tour of the catacombs. Not what we thought! This is not a hokey ghost tour. It was an authentic retelling of the history of New York and the cathedral. We particularly appreciated the real stories of the people who used the church and all of their challenges. The catacombs are peaceful and a beautiful tribute to those who rest below the church. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, friendly and shared some personal experiences. Thank you so much!

Interesting tour - Informative tour guide, Leo, so learned a lot about 19th-20th century NYC. Not your popular tour of NY but interesting.

Not terrible but not great - The guide was friendly and knowledgeable but it's more of a Catholic history lesson and less of a catacombs tour. You are in the catacombs for about 15 minutes or less. Most the time is spent above ground on the church property.
