Additional Information

If you’re looking for a day or half-day adventure that will take you off the beaten path of NYC, Governors Island is a great choice. Known mostly to locals, the island has only been open to the public since 2003, and not yet on the tourist radar. It contains two historic forts and a massive, new public park. It’s rich with American and New York history, and has served as a military base since the year 1800. In the 21st century the island has been ingeniously reimagined as an innovative public space. It is home to many arts, education, cultural and environmental non-profits who are finding new and exciting ways to use the space. The island is just 172 acres total, with a 2-mile (3.2 km) perimeter, so it’s bite-sized. It’s many lawns and shade trees beckon you to enjoy a picnic lunch, and the kids will love it. And, as there are no cars allowed, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a bike ride. Rental is for the entire day, so you can stay and enjoy the Adirondack chairs and hammocks.

A great, friendly guide for bike-riders of all levels! - My partner and I were afraid that we'd be too out of shape and out of practice to enjoy an inner-city bike ride with an experienced rider like Scott, but he laid out a course that was safe and perfectly matched to us. Before our ride, he showed us a Google Map of the sights we'd be biking to; he knew many places along the way to get good food, photos and bathroom breaks; he was knowledgable about famous landmarks and areas while being brief and witty; and he even planned in breaks so we could enjoy our day rather than going at it too hard. While he planned us a nice, leisurely day, I'm confident that he could also plan a biking tour for more experienced and athletic riders. He was friendly, laid back and made the entire experience fun and easy. His company and the pleasant weather and ride all made it an excellent experience, whether for newcomers to NYC or regular visitors like me — he showed me parts of the city I'd never seen before. And to see them from a bike was all the more rewarding. I'd highly recommend him and will definitely do another bike tour with him sometime.

Active, Fun, Informative Tour of an Underrated NYC Gem - Due to COVID, I ended up with a personal bike tour from Scott, but the conditions that day (e.g. a morning booking, great weather, less crowd) made the experience even better. Scott was friendly and knowledgeable about not just the island itself, but was also able to share other NYC history. Scott was very familiar with the island and it was fun to tour it by bike. I walked away from his tour more informed and appreciative of this true city gem.
