During the 1720s, France transported women from their penal and brothel institutions to their colonies and handed them to Ursuline sisters for ‘reformation’. Interestingly, many chose to light up their red lanterns in the outskirts of the city, laying foundations for the most prosperous red light area in the region. Governor Bienville acknowledged that no level of surveillance could tame them.

In Storyville, the red light quarter of the early 20th century, glamorous madams adorned in diamonds ruled over their ‘sinful mansions’. Some of them were so affluent and influential, they were known to commit atrocities - with reported instances of murder going unpenalized (one such case implicated a U.S. Senator!).

Pocket a memento of this awe-inspiring and salacious history you’ll recall for a lifetime.

Unique tour emphasis on the strong women of NOLA - Got into NOLA @ 11 and booked this for 2. Best way to start the trip! Highly recommend! Wonderful knowledge of history from the female perspective! Guide was funny and engaging. By the end we were able to navigate the quarter fairly easily and had a good idea of what we wanted to do/experience in the coming days.

Highly recommend this great tour! - Spectacular tour full of many details. This tour was one of the most engaging and enjoyable tours we’ve ever taken. The stories were detailed and exciting. Our guide had numerous supplementary images to supplement and place into context the stories of these remarkable and powerful women. Our stops were well planned. Overall, I can’t say enough about this well thought out tour.

Founding Mothers - My sister was visiting from out of town and it gave us locals a chance to finally go on this walking tour. Our guide, Jackson, was patient, thoughtful, and well researched. His stories were interesting and helped contextualize the reputation New Orleans still maintains to this day. I enjoyed meeting these historical and impactful women. The weather was beautiful, sidewalks not too treacherous, and plenty of stops for shade and drinks!
