Highlights
  • Masonic Temple Cemetery #2 - Founded in 1865 by the Grand Lodge of the State of Louisiana Free and Accepted Masons, the Masonic Cemetery expresses a character distinct from the Catholic cemeteries that dominate the city. It is known for its many unusual, elaborate tombs, a reputation due in part to the cemetery’s communal nature: members of lodges pooled resources to purchase large group tombs. Occupying two oddly shaped city blocks, the cemetery is triangular in plan, with Conti Street bisecting it. The triangular footprint of the bordering streets overlaid with the cemetery’s angular internal walkways mimics the Masonic emblem of the square and compass. Cast-iron picket fences enclose its two distinct sections, while oak allées line its northern and western edges. Tombs are compactly arranged in rows parallel to Bienville Street, with a wide, paved promenade cutting through the center to provide access to smaller walkways between rows.

Excellent - So much history and information on this tour. Our guide was knowledgeable and passionate about the history and the paranormal experiences her patrons were looking for. She was dedicated to respecting the lives and the final resting places of the departed.

Unexpected fun! - So.... our bus was a bit late because it broke down and we had a rowdy group with us (it is NOLA after all). We almost opted out and Viator was flexible with us due to the circumstances, however, our daughter decided to push through anyways. We went, and our host controlled the atmosphere beautifully - he was fantastic! This was a highlight for me, and I'd say be prepared for a wild ride, yes, but be prepared to be wowed too!

Great Tour - Really interesting tour. Kendel was a great tour guide who made the whole experience by sharing his own experiences of the graveyards and the Katrina hurricane. Highly recommended.

Informative and interesting - not scary - The tour was informative and our driver, Bob, infused some humor into his storytelling. The bus took us past a few cemeteries and the driver spoke briefly about each one. We were allowed into two other Cemetaries, including the Charity Hospital Cemetary, where there is a memorial for the Katrina victims and where the unidentified were buried. Our driver provided an informative description of the above ground burial process, which I found interesting. We were permitted to walk through and take photos, trying to capture "ghosts". There was a stop at cafe, for personal comfort break and option to purchase snacks and beverages. It was not a scary tour. Mostly enjoyed it.

Skip the tour - go by yourself at night. - Stephanie is an amazing tour guide and very plugged into the ghost tourism scene. My lower score is purely for the fact that I paid $90 for my fiancé and I to walk around a cemetery at night…and we got 5 minutes. Literally. 5. Whole. Minutes. The drunken fools on the tour were expected. They were noisy to the point I couldn’t hear the guide, and the guide wasn’t mic’d so that was tough too.
