Originally built in the 10th century by Hindu Rajput King Badal Singh, it was later reconstructed by the third Mughal King Akbar, who added numerous red sandstone palaces. Shahjahan also contributed stunning white marble buildings. Notable palaces within Agra Fort include Jahangir Palace, Diwan-a-khas, Diwan-a-am, and Khas Mahal.

Akbar moved the capital from Agra to Fatehpur Sikri, ruling for 15 years and building numerous palaces with Hindu and Muslim architectural influences. Fatehpur Sikri consists of two parts: the first includes beautiful palaces like Diwan-a-am, Diwan-a-khas, Jodha Bai Palace, and Panch Mahal. The second part features a stunning mosque, the tomb of Salim Chisti, and the impressive Gate. The tomb of Salim Chisti is a masterpiece of screenwork in white marble, attracting many devotees who tie threads to fulfill their wishes. Buland Darwaza, the tallest door in the world, was built by Akbar to celebrate his victory in Gujarat.
