Delhi - Agra
New Delhi - Guests will be collected from Delhi airport or their hotel and transported to Agra in a private vehicle with a chauffeur. Upon reaching Agra, check-in at the hotel.
In the afternoon, embark on a local sightseeing tour of Agra. Visit Agra Fort, constructed by Emperor Akbar on the west bank of the Yamuna River. The Agra Fort is a prominent feature in the city center. This crescent-shaped fort boasts a 20-meter high and 2.4-kilometer long outer wall, enclosing a labyrinth of buildings that form a small city within a city. Notable sites within the fort include the Diwan-i-Aam (hall of public audience), the Diwan-i-Khas (hall of private audience), the octagonal Musamman Burj tower, Khas Mahal, Sheesh Mahal (the mirror palace), and the Anguri Bagh (the Grape Garden).
Later, visit one of the world’s most beautiful buildings, the Taj Mahal, located in the historic city of Agra. Known as the “symbol of love,” it was commissioned by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a tribute to his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Annually, more visitors than the entire population of Agra pass through its magnificent gates to admire this breathtaking monument. Described by Rabindranath Tagore as “a teardrop on the cheek of eternity,” the Taj Mahal is celebrated as the finest example of Mughal architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Spanning over 60 bighas, the Taj Mahal was built using white marble sourced from Makrana in Rajasthan.
Taj Mahal - The grandeur of the Taj is perhaps the most photographed, filmed, described, and sketched building globally. The Taj Mahal is where fantasy meets reality in perfect harmony. It has inspired countless artists over the centuries and stands as an ode to love. No other monument in the world can match its epitome of love. The splendor and beauty of this magnificent edifice draw visitors back to experience its magic. The beauty of the Taj lies in its simplicity. It is rare for anyone not to fall in love with its pure and simple beauty in white. Emperor Shah Jahan created many architectural marvels during his reign, but the Taj Mahal is the pinnacle. As a World Heritage site and the seventh architectural wonder of the world, the Taj Mahal stands apart. The emperor deeply loved his wife Mumtaz. When she passed away in 1631 during childbirth, Shah Jahan lost his zest for life. He then decided to build a mausoleum for his beloved that the world would remember. Indeed, the Taj Mahal mesmerizes all who visit it. Shah Jahan employed the finest artisans and architects to work on this masterpiece. After 22 years and with 20,000 workers laboring day and night, the world’s most beautiful monument, the Taj Mahal, was completed.
Agra Fort - The magnificent structure in Red Sandstone appears strong and invincible. It is commonly believed that Mughal Emperor Akbar built it and his successors further developed it. However, the fort was initially a small fortress constructed by a Hindu warlord around the 5th century, recognizing Agra’s strategic importance on the Yamuna River banks. Later, when Hindu kings and their dynasties were overtaken by Muslim rulers, the small fortress was expanded into a massive fort. The Lodhis rebuilt it in the 13th century, and Mughal Emperor Akbar renovated the fort in 1565 A.D. Although Akbar built it for military purposes, his son Jehangir and grandson Shah Jahan transformed it into a palatial fort. The majestic structure spans nearly 3 km, with walls 20 feet high, surrounded by a moat filled with water and crocodiles. The fort, constructed with Red Sandstone, is considered the predecessor of Delhi’s Red Fort. Many buildings within the fort were built by Shah Jahan, including the stunning Pearl Mosque. The only remaining building constructed by Akbar is the Jehangiri Mahal, which stands out with its dominant Hindu architecture. The Diwan-e-Aam and the Diwan-e-Khas are audience halls built by Shah Jahan. The Sheesh Mahal near the Diwan-e-Khas is a beautiful palace with inlaid mirror work on the walls. The Mussaman Burj, built by Shah Jahan, holds significance in the Agra Fort.
Agra - Fatehpur Sikri - Ranthambore
Agra - After breakfast, check out from the hotel and drive towards Ranthambore.
On the way, visit Fatehpur Sikri, the old deserted town of the Mughal Dynasty. Built in red sandstone in honor of Saint Salim Chishti, who predicted the birth of three sons to Emperor Akbar, it exemplifies robust stability combined with originality. This magnificent fortified ancient city was the short-lived capital of the Mughal Empire between 1572 and 1585, during Emperor Akbar’s reign. Previously, Akbar visited the village of Sikri to consult the Sufi saint Shaikh Salim Chishti, who foretold the birth of an heir to the Mughal throne. When the prophecy came true, Akbar established his new capital here, including a stunning mosque still in use today, and three palaces, one for each of his favorite wives – one Hindu, one Muslim, and one Christian (though Hindu villagers in Sikri dispute these claims).
Upon arrival in Ranthambore, check in at the hotel. The rest of the day is free for leisure.
Fatehpur Sikri - Approximately 40 km from Agra’s main city stands Emperor Akbar’s ephemeral capital, Fatehpur Sikri, or the City of Victory. Built by Akbar in the 16th century, it is a beautiful city made of brilliant red sandstone available locally. The city is situated on a hill ridge within a 5 sq. km area, next to a lake that has since dried up. The rapid construction of the city is mysterious, as is its desertion. It is said that Akbar decided to build a mosque for the Sufi saint Salim Chishti on its current site as a gesture of gratitude. Akbar had no heir to his kingdom, and after the saint’s prophecy, he was blessed with three sons. As he began constructing the palaces, harems, courtyards, pools, and places of public and private audience following the mosque and tomb’s construction, his ministers also began building their houses around it, thus creating a vast city in no time.
