Constructed in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber, Jaipur was the first planned city in India, designed according to the Shilpa-Shastra, an ancient Hindu architectural treatise. Known as the Pink City due to the color of its historic buildings, Jaipur was painted pink to honor Prince Albert of England’s visit in 1882.
