- Chandni Chowk - Originally, Chandni Chowk was a half-moon-shaped square located in front of the Municipal Townhall, with its reflection shimmering in the moonlit water pool nearby. A shallow water channel, sourced from the Yamuna river, ran through the center of the straight road known as the Chandni Chowk bazaar, flanked by roads and shops. This road featured three bazaars. Chandni Chowk, or Moonlight Square, along with its three bazaars, was designed and established by Princess Jahanara Begum, the favored daughter of Shah Jahan, in 1650 CE.
- Friday Mosque (Jama Masjid) - The Masjid-i Jehan-Numa, meaning ‘World-reflecting Mosque’, commonly referred to as the Jama Masjid of Delhi, ranks among the largest mosques in India. Constructed by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1650 and 1656, it was inaugurated by its first Imam, Syed Abdul Ghafoor Shah Bukhari. Located in the Mughal capital of Shahjahanabad (now Old Delhi), it served as the imperial mosque for the Mughal emperors until the empire’s end in 1857. The Jama Masjid was seen as a symbol of Islamic power across India, even during the colonial era, and played a significant political role during key periods of British rule. It remains actively used and is one of Delhi’s most iconic landmarks, closely associated with the spirit of Old Delhi.
- Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib - Situated in the heart of Chandni Chowk, Delhi’s most renowned marketplace, Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib is a historical shrine marking the exact location where Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, was executed in 1675 on the orders of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. The Gurudwara is built in the Mughal architectural style, featuring mesh-work windows, pavilions, and parapets in sandstone, unlike the typical white marble of other Gurudwaras. It alternated between serving as a Mosque and a Gurudwara due to the sensitive political climate before becoming a full-fledged Gurudwara with gold-gilded domes in 1930. It includes a separate building for the Langar (free kitchen) and accommodation for visitors and the homeless. It also houses relics from the Guru’s life, such as the well from which he drank while imprisoned and the tree under which he was executed.
- Khari Baoli - Khari Baoli is a street in Delhi, India, renowned for its wholesale grocery and as Asia’s largest wholesale spice market, offering a variety of spices, nuts, herbs, and food products like rice and tea.
- Naughara - Row Of Nine Houses - The name Naughara translates to nine (nau) homes (ghar), though one source suggests it refers to nine pots (ghara) of water for thirsty travelers. Regardless of its origin, Naughara remains one of the most charming lanes of Shahjahanabad, especially as the quiet gated neighborhood is accessed through the bustling Kinaari Bazaar. At the lane’s end is the white-marble entrance to the 19th-century Jain Swetamber Mandir, adorned with exotic glasswork and vibrant paintings. Be cautious of the temple attendant, and on your way out, visit Mr. Atma Ram Agarwal’s office, filled with antiques that might be mistaken for a shop!
- Sri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir - Shri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir is the oldest and most renowned Jain temple in Delhi, India, located directly across from the Red Fort in the historic Chandni Chowk area. The temple is notable for its avian veterinary hospital, known as the Jain Birds Hospital, situated in a second building behind the main temple.
