In the 17th century, Mughal emperor Shah Jahan established his capital in what is now known as Old Delhi. Today, it is one of the city’s most bustling, vibrant, and fascinating areas, offering a sensory feast of sights, sounds, and aromas. Visitors will stroll through the lively bazaars and historic shrines along Old Delhi’s main thoroughfare, Chandni Chowk. The guide will share insights into Old Delhi’s rich history as guests pass by famous landmarks such as the UNESCO World Heritage site Jama Masjid, India’s largest mosque and one of Asia’s grandest, and catch a glimpse of the Red Fort.
- Digambar Jain Temple - Guests will walk past the Digambar Jain Temple, where the main devotional room on the first floor houses images and statues of revered Jain figures like Lord Mahavira and Lord Parasnath. The temple compound also features a bird hospital.
- Gauri Shankar Temple - Adjacent is the Hindu Gauri Shankar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It features a lingam believed to be approximately 800 years old, along with statues of Shiva, his wife Parvati, and their sons, Ganesh and Kartik. The marble chair belongs to the Hindu saint Bhagat Swaroup Bramachari, who spent over 50 years at this temple.
- Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib - Nearby on Chandni Chowk is the Sisganj Gurdwara, a Sikh temple built on the site where, in 1675, the Mughals executed Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru. Guests will continue walking to the famous Jalebiwala, a 140-year-old sweet shop at the corner of Chandni Chowk and Dariba Kalan Road, to enjoy delicious sticky jalebis (deep-fried syrupy treats). The bazaar along Dariba Kalan Road offers a variety of jewelry, primarily silver, but also some gold and other pieces. A short walk further leads to Kinari Bazaar, known for wedding items like sparkling tinsel decorations and ornate bridal accessories.
- Khari Baoli - Guests will enjoy a brief rickshaw ride to Khari Baoli, the largest spice market in Asia. They will then explore Ballimaaran, an area known for its havelis (private mansions). The guide will explain the historical and architectural importance of these havelis, including Ghalib Ki Haveli, the residence of the renowned Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib. A left turn leads to Nai Sarak, Delhi’s largest book market.
- Friday Mosque (Jama Masjid) - The tour concludes at the Jama Masjid mosque, after which guests will be transported back to their hotel in Delhi.
