The name “moonlight square” originates from a canal that once ran down the center, reflecting moonlight at key intersections. Although the water is gone, Chandni Chowk remains a bustling street lined with shops, schools, residences, and both new and old places of worship.
• Friday Mosque (Jama Masjid) - Constructed in 1656 AD by Shah Jahan, this is the largest mosque in India, accommodating approximately twenty-five thousand people. The domes are crafted from white marble, and the prayer hall is supported by 260 pillars.
• India Gate - Designed by Edward Lutyens, the India Gate is a military memorial honoring Indian soldiers who perished in World War I. The names of many soldiers who died in the war are inscribed on its walls.
• Rashtrapati Bhavan - Spanning 330 acres, the President House, or Rashtrapati Bhavan, is a government complex featuring a private Mughal garden designed by the esteemed architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. Located in the Raisina Hills, it serves as the official residence of India’s President.
• Gurudwara Bangla Sahib - It is said that during the ninth Sikh Guru’s visit to the King in 1664, he provided water from the tank to those suffering from cholera and smallpox. The water tank used by the Guru still exists within the gurudwara and is believed to have healing properties.
