The National Museum is among the largest museums in India. Founded in 1949, its collections span from the prehistoric era to contemporary art. The museum boasts over 200,000 artworks, both Indian and international, showcasing over five thousand years of Indian cultural heritage. The origins of the National Museum trace back to an exhibition of Indian art and artifacts at the Royal Academy in London in 1947. Following the London exhibition, the curators decided to present the same collection in India. Its success led to the establishment of a permanent National Museum.
- Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum - After completing the tour, guests will be transported to the Indira Gandhi Memorial. This historic Memorial Museum honors the memory of a remarkable woman, leader, and statesperson. The museum is located in her former residence. Indira Gandhi, daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of Independent India, was the first female Prime Minister and is known as the Iron Lady of India. Visiting this museum offers a captivating insight into the Indian independence movement during her era. On Wednesday, October 31, 1984, Indira Gandhi was tragically assassinated by her own bodyguards. Exhibits include the saree she wore at the time of her assassination and a crystal plaque preserving the brown spots of her blood.
- National Gandhi Museum - The final stop will be the National Gandhi Museum. Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on the evening of January 30, 1948. Shortly after his passing, collectors began gathering and preserving personal relics, manuscripts, books, journals, documents, photographs, and audio-visual materials, all of which contribute to a museum dedicated to Gandhi’s life, philosophy, and work. The National Gandhi Museum features rich exhibits and memorabilia closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian Freedom Struggle.
