Beyond being a home for the emperors and their families, it was the ceremonial and political hub of the Mughal empire, hosting events that significantly influenced the region.
- India Gate - India Gate, originally known as the All India War Memorial, is a war memorial positioned along the Rajpath, on the eastern end of New Delhi’s “ceremonial axis,” previously called Kingsway. It honors 70,000 soldiers of the British Indian Army who lost their lives between 1914 and 1921 during World War I in various locations including France, Flanders, Mesopotamia, Persia, East Africa, Gallipoli, and other parts of the Near and Far East, as well as the Third Anglo-Afghan War. The names of 13,300 servicemen, including some from the United Kingdom, are inscribed on the gate. Although a war memorial, India Gate’s architectural style resembles that of a triumphal arch, akin to the Arch of Constantine in Rome, and is often compared to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and the Gateway of India in Mumbai. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, a simple structure was added beneath the archway in 1972, following the Bangladesh Liberation War, featuring a black marble plinth with a reversed rifle, a war helmet, and four eternal flames.
- Birla Mandir Temple (Lakshmi Narayan) - The Laxminarayan Temple, also known as the Birla Mandir, is a Hindu temple largely dedicated to Laxminarayan in Delhi, India. Laxminarayan refers to Vishnu, the Preserver in the Trimurti, also known as Narayan, when accompanied by his consort Lakshmi. Built by Jugal Kishore Birla between 1933 and 1939, the temple was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi. The side temples are dedicated to Shiva, Krishna, and Buddha. It was the first large Hindu temple constructed in Delhi, spanning 7.5 acres, and features numerous shrines, fountains, and a large garden with Hindu and Nationalistic sculptures, as well as Geeta Bhawan for discourses. The temple is a major attraction in Delhi, drawing thousands of devotees during the festivals of Janmashtami and Diwali.
- Gurudwara Bangla Sahib - Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is one of the most significant Sikh gurdwaras, or Sikh places of worship, in Delhi, renowned for its connection to the eighth Sikh Guru, Guru Har Krishan, and the pool within its complex, known as the “Sarovar.” Initially constructed as a small shrine by Sikh General Sardar Bhagel Singh in 1783, who oversaw the building of nine Sikh shrines in Delhi that year during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Alam. Located near Connaught Place, New Delhi, on Baba Kharak Singh Marg, it is easily identifiable by its golden dome and tall flagpole.
