Additional Information

The Semâ ceremony embodies a man’s mystical journey of spiritual elevation through love. It signifies his abandonment of ego, his discovery of truth, and his arrival at perfection. Upon returning from this spiritual voyage, the individual has attained maturity and a higher state of perfection, enabling him to love and serve all beings without discrimination based on creed, class, or ethnicity. The dervish, with his head-dress (a symbol of his ego’s tombstone) and his white skirt (a metaphor for his ego’s shroud), is spiritually reborn into the truth. By shedding his black cloak, he embarks on a journey towards spiritual maturity through the stages of the Semâ. At the beginning and each phase of the Semâ, his crosswise arms represent the digit one, testifying to God’s unity. As he spins, his open arms, with the right hand pointing towards the sky to receive God’s blessing and left hand orienting towards the earth, he spins from right to left, rotating around the heart.
