Riding the Waves of Negril: A Day on the One Love Bus Bar Crawl
When the waves called me to Negril, Jamaica, I couldn’t resist the allure of the One Love Bus Bar Crawl. Join me as I recount a day filled with vibrant bars, local flavors, and unforgettable sunsets.
The Colorful Ride Begins
As a professional surfer, I’ve spent countless days chasing waves and exploring beach towns across Central America. But this time, my adventure took me to the vibrant shores of Negril, Jamaica, where I decided to hop on the One Love Bus for a bar crawl like no other. The moment I laid eyes on the bus, painted in a kaleidoscope of colors, I knew I was in for a treat. Lenbert, the charismatic driver and owner, greeted us by name, setting the tone for a day filled with laughter and camaraderie.
Our first stop was Mi Yard, a quintessential local bar perched on the cliffs of Negril. The simplicity of the place was charming, and the view of the ocean was nothing short of spectacular. I ordered a Red Stripe, while my wife opted for a Rum Cream on the rocks. As we sipped our drinks, a tray of local snacks made its way around—escovich fish, fried plantains, and festival. The flavors were as vibrant as the surroundings, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of belonging in this laid-back paradise.
A Journey Through Negril’s Hidden Gems
The tour continued with a short walk to The Swordfish Restaurant Bar & Grill, where we found ourselves perched above the water, taking in the breathtaking views. The atmosphere was relaxed, with a gentle breeze carrying the sound of waves crashing against the cliffs. I took a moment to reflect on the beauty of this place, a hidden gem that felt worlds away from the bustling surf spots I’m used to.
As we moved from bar to bar, each stop offered a unique slice of Jamaican life. At C&D Country Western Roadside Bar, I was amused by the juxtaposition of country music in a tropical setting. The sorrel juice was a refreshing change, and I couldn’t resist trying a slice of Jenny’s famous cake. At No Limit Bar, we mingled with locals playing dominoes, and I even got a chance to meet Rob and Lisa, the webmasters of Negril.com, who joined us for the rest of the tour.
Sunset and Sweet Farewells
As the sun began to set, we arrived at Sir D’s Firewater, a simple yet enchanting spot on the cliffs. The sky was painted in hues of orange and pink, and the sound of local kids diving off the rocks added to the magic of the moment. I savored a glass of ginger wine, its warmth mirroring the glow of the setting sun. It was one of those moments that reminded me why I love this nomadic lifestyle—each day brings new experiences and unforgettable memories.
Our final stop was Bella Donna Restaurant, where the laughter was infectious, and the pizza was a delightful twist on a classic. As the night drew to a close, I felt a sense of gratitude for the people I’d met and the stories I’d heard. The One Love Bus Bar Crawl was more than just a tour; it was an authentic Jamaican experience that left me with a deeper appreciation for this beautiful island and its vibrant culture.
