Royal Botanical Gardens - Located in Peradeniya, the Royal Botanical Gardens are the oldest formal gardens in Sri Lanka. Situated about 5 kilometers west of Kandy in the Central Province, these gardens are at an elevation of 460 meters above sea level. The impressive Avenue of Royal Palms is part of Sri Lanka’s largest garden, which spans 147 acres (60 hectares) and offers a delightful stroll among nearly 4,000 different plant species.
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - The sacred tooth relic of Buddha was brought from India to the island and has been held by royalty. Initially preserved in Kandy in a structure built by Vimmaladarmasurya, the founder of the capital, it was later moved to a newly rebuilt structure by his successors. The temple is constructed above a moat, with a stone staircase leading through a tunnel to the drummers’ courtyard. Visitors are greeted by a two-story building, with the upper floor housing the gem-studded gold casket containing the Buddha’s sacred tooth relic.
Kandy View Point - Ascend the hill adjacent to Kandy Lake to reach Kandy View Point, which provides a breathtaking view of the city. As a popular tourist spot, the area attracts numerous vendors, some of whom sell substandard goods. It’s advisable to keep an eye on personal belongings due to prevalent pickpocketing. The top of the hill offers stunning views of the lake and the city.
Kandy Lake - Also known as Kiri Muhuda or the Sea of Milk, Kandy Lake is an artificial lake in the heart of Kandy, Sri Lanka. Created by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in 1807 near the Temple of the Tooth, the lake’s size has diminished over time. Fishing is prohibited in this protected lake, which is surrounded by myths and legends. One such tale involves the small island in the lake’s center, once used for swimming by the king’s entourage and connected to the palace by a secret tunnel.

During the hot and humid months of March, April, and May, the colonial government would relocate to Nuwara Eliya. Both domestic and international tourists visit to enjoy the pleasant climate, play golf, stroll through the park, admire the lush plantations, visit the Hakgala gardens, and explore the world, culminating at the Horton Plains, which features a dramatic elevation drop of several thousand feet.
