A Journey Through Time and Taste

As a former professional surfer, my life has always been about chasing the perfect wave, but this time, I found myself chasing history and flavor in the heart of Nassau. The day began with a gentle breeze as we set off on a tour that promised to blend the rich history of the Bahamas with its vibrant present. Our guide, Karon, was a fountain of knowledge, weaving tales of the island’s past with the ease of a seasoned storyteller.

Our first stop was the iconic Paradise Island, a place where luxury meets the azure embrace of the Caribbean Sea. The opulent resorts stood like sentinels over the impossibly blue waters, a sight that never fails to take my breath away. As we crossed the 65-foot bridge connecting Nassau to this island paradise, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the beauty that surrounded us.

Climbing Through History

The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the Queen’s Staircase. This limestone marvel, hand-carved in the late 18th century, is a testament to the resilience and craftsmanship of the Bahamian people. Climbing all 64 steps, I felt a connection to the past, each step echoing with stories of those who had come before. At the top, Fort Fincastle awaited, offering panoramic views of Nassau that were worth every bit of the climb.

The journey continued with a visit to a charming chocolate factory, where the air was sweet with the scent of cocoa. The Sky Juice praline was a revelation, a perfect blend of local flavors that danced on the palate. In contrast, the bold aroma of fine tobacco at the cigar factory was a reminder of the island’s diverse cultural tapestry.

Sipping on Liquid Gold

No trip to Nassau would be complete without a visit to John Watling’s Distillery. Here, the rich complexity of their 10-year aged Bullion rum was a liquid history in a glass. Each sip was a journey through time, a taste of the island’s storied past. As the afternoon sun cast golden hues over the distillery, I found myself lost in the moment, savoring the flavors and the stories they told.

The day concluded at Junkanoo Beach, where the turquoise waters mirrored our frosted margaritas and the crisp Bahamian Kalik beer. Laughter mingled with the rhythm of the waves, sealing the memory in salt-kissed bliss.
