Ofotbanen

The initiation of the Ofotbanen dates back to the late 19th century and spanned into the early years of the subsequent century. This rail line was established to provide an ice-free export harbor for the immense iron ore reserves found in northern Sweden. Migrant laborers, also known as ‘rallers’, pursued their luck in what was colloquially known as Europe’s ‘Klondyke’. The construction involving over 5,000 individuals marked the apex of this endeavor.

Amazing - Beautiful scenery with very friendly helpful staff. This is truly a once in a lifetime experience that you will never forget. They say sit on the left as that is the best view, don’t worry if you aren’t seated on the left because the train crew ask people to swap over so you get a view going or returning. We travelled with parents and family and this trip appealed to all ages. Fantastic value for money.

A must do experience - A very scenic and pleasant trip. Unfortunately it was very misty which was a shame but we enjoyed being in the snow - it was a very atmospheric experience. The train the tour guides were extremely helpful. It was a bonus on our cruise.

Great landscape views along fjord - Excellent trip. Same as the cruise ship one at a fraction of the cost. Sit on left (fjord facing) side of train on departure. Ideally people are to switch sides for return trip but not everyone extends common courtesy. Area near train doors has fold down seats that offer good views and easy window access.

Arctic Train was worth the time - We took the 11:40am train. It was a lumbering ride with a few station stops along the way. You were able to jump off, stretch your legs and reboard. The higher elevations offered beautiful views and waterfalls over the valleys. Be sure to get a seat on the LEFT side as it offers the best views. Also, be sure to grab a drink and snack at the station cafe before you depart. The selection is better.

Arctic Train to Norway - don’t miss it! - Amazing trip on train from Stockholm to Narvik , Norway. Left Stockholm Central Station at 6pm. We originally paid for 2 seats but when we inquired if there were any couchettes available, we were able to upgrade our 2 seats for a 3 person couchette (for only the 2 of us) for $180 which was really worth it! 18 hour trip, 3 hours of darkness ….it was amazing & the views just got better & better as we got closer to Norway. Absolutely beautiful trip. Staff was helpful, bar cart, & beds were comfy with down comforters & pillows. Sink in room, vented window, luggage storage cubby & bathrooms at both ends of wagon. Highly recommend this incredible train trip!

Fun train trip - Great trip. Very good narration. Beautiful scenery. Be sure to sit on the left side. That’s where the view is both directions. The nice people sitting across from us switched seats with us. Enjoyed the experience!

Arctic train-left side - It was a nice short train ride and 3 stops for taking pictures. However the train goes in one direction back and fro. The customers on left side gets the scenery twice. The train does not require rotation and the customers stuck on the right side saw very limited scenery.

Too much promise, hardly any highlights. - Unfortunately, it was a very boring, expensive tour. As ship passengers, we were hoping to gain new impressions of nature in the "hinterland". The journey time is just under 60 minutes on a one-way route, there were 4 stops along the way, unfortunately not in the most beautiful places. The announcements were purely in English and gave information about WWII and the bridge construction. The advertised, multilingual audio guide via app does not offer any tracks for the Arctic Train route. We were able to take a few nice pictures, but nothing more. If you accidentally choose the wrong side when boarding, you will not have any view of the fjord. 80% of the route is rocky and steep mountains/forests. Unfortunately, the train does not turn around, so you return the same way with the same view. No audio guide and no photo stops on the way back. Free tea and coffee on board, very hot but not very tasty. A real shame!
