Hawke’s Bay Trails - Your cycling adventure begins at the Takaro Trails site at 26 Marine Parade, Napier. Start with a tour briefing to decide the distance you’ll be cycling today.
NOTE: If you wish to visit a winery, PLEASE BOOK directly with them. Some days they are FULLY BOOKED, and you may not get a tasting.
Set off and cycle along the coastal trail towards the stunning Cape Kidnappers visible in the distance. After 8km, you can either turn up the Tutaekuri River towards Brookfields, Church Road (open 7 days, PLEASE BOOK), or Mission Estate (open 7 days, PLEASE BOOK) wineries OR continue along the coastal cycle trail across the Tukituki River via Black Bridge to reach Clearview (open Wed-Sun, PLEASE BOOK) or Elephant Hill (open Thurs-Sun, PLEASE BOOK) wineries. The choice is yours; they are all approximately 22km/14 miles from the starting point. Remember, you must return, so that’s another 20-22km!
A MAP will be provided for guidance. - Brookfields Vineyards - Please book a wine tasting directly if you wish to stop here. Located 12km from the starting point on the Taradale 40km Loop trail.
- Church Road Winery Cellar Door - Please book a wine tasting or lunch directly if you wish to stop. Located 23km from the starting point on the Taradale 40km Loop trail.
- Mission Estate Winery - Please book a wine tasting directly if you wish to stop here. Located 25km from the starting point on the Taradale 40km Loop trail.
- Clearview Estate Winery - Please book a wine tasting directly if you plan to cycle here. Located 22km from the starting point on the Cape Kidnappers coastal trails.
- Elephant Hill - Please book a wine tasting directly if you wish to stop. Located 21km from the starting point on the Cape Kidnappers coastal trails.

This self-guided tour includes a map for your convenience. Plan for at least 3.5 hours to complete these routes, which include 1-2 stops at wineries.
Please be aware that not all wineries operate daily. Check the winery opening days listed below.
The route follows a dedicated cycle path, covering approximately 40km/25 miles, with about 2.5 hours of cycling alongside the Pacific Ocean, through farmland, orchards, river stop banks, and estuaries.
Explore wineries along the way with two route options:
- Loop Trail: 40km/25 miles with wineries such as Mission (open 7 days), Church Road (open 7 days), and Urban Winery (open Thursday-Sunday).
- Coastal Trail: 50km/31 miles round trip with wineries like Clearview (open Wednesday-Sunday) and Elephant Hill (open Thursday-Sunday).
Please remember to book your winery visits in advance, as they tend to be busy and may sell out on cruise days.

Your port shuttle bus will drop you off at the Napier isite (2km from the port). Keep an eye out on this ride - look to your left for some GREEN FLAGS which are outside our base. This is where you will walk to to meet us & get your bikes - a 5 minute, 650m walk.

Beautiful ocean vistas - This is a self guided bike tour in Napier. If you wish to go to the wineries you need to make your own reservations. Napier has a beautiful harbor and Scranton’s with paved bike trails. There are several bike routes to choose from all of which are paved trails. Bikes were pedal assist and worked well.

Good times riding along in Napier - The people at the location where you pick up the bikes are very friendly, very accommodating, and very knowledgeable about the area and how the “Pedal assist” not fully my automatic E-bikes work. We had a great ride along the shore to a remote winery and then lunch along the waterfront by our selves, nobody else to worry about either. Good times for sure!!!

A wonderful way to see the country - So friendly amazing bikes. We had a blast and they were so amazing at arranging everything. Was easy going everythough we hadn’t ridden a bike in years.

Good Ride - Good Bikes - This bike ride was very enjoyable. The bikes provided were in very good condition and easy to ride. We skipped the trip to the winery and just enjoyed the ride along the coast. There were little towns to stop in, a coffee bus along the path, and many places to just stop, sit on a bench or walk on the beach.

Great trip, great food and drink, wish we’d known about the roadworks! - And lovely experience with good equipment fitted to the participants. Beautiful countryside and helped by scorching weather! The wineries are always worth a visit, but the cycling helped to make it a trio to remember. Slight niggle in that the roadworks nearby meant the cycle route was diverted and the staff had only recently learned about it and amended the route. The bikes themselves performed well however my partners bike lost top gear which hampered progress a little.
The staff were super helpful and accommodating.
Overall a definite must do event whilst inn the Napier!

Not long enough - I loved the e bike to the wineries. The bikes were very nice and worked well. The add should have a few details for a better experience. Half day is not long enough. The wineries are a minimum of 1 hour ride away. The trails are nice and not much time on city streets. Also, wineries don’t open until 11, so 10 am would be a better start time.

I recommend to book a E-bike if you are not use to cycling. - We've just book normal standard bikes for our trip. Maybe we were just unlucky cause we had the wind most of the time from the front that made our experience together with a standard bike not so enjoyable. For people who never cycle, it was hard.
Also majority of the route till up to the winery we cycle next to the busy roads. Maybe my expectations was to high, cause I've imagine all this beautiful sceneries before reaching the winery but it unfortunately was not that impressive.
We visited the Church Road Winery for wine tasting, which we were told will take us about 90min to reach.
The wine tasting was lovely!! I highly recommend that and maybe a E-bike to make this outing enjoyable!!
