- Farm Tomita - A visit to Furano is incomplete without stopping by this iconic location! Lavender has been cultivated here since 1958, making it a traditional lavender field. It gained fame through the JR annual calendar when JR was known by a different name.
The farm is renowned for its stunning display of seven flower colors, creating a rainbow effect. These include purple lavender, white baby’s breath, orange California poppies, and more. This picturesque view is often what people remember most about Furano.
Just 4km from this farm is “Lavender East,” where you can witness expansive lavender fields in full bloom, a sight best enjoyed in July. Make sure to visit during this time of year.
Don’t forget to visit the gift shop to take home some lavender! It’s recommended to visit early in the morning for a peaceful experience.
- Ningle Terrace - Nestled in the forest near Shinfurano Prince Hotel, this charming shopping area consists of 15 log houses and is named after a dwarf from a storybook. Enjoy unique natural goods available only here as you stroll through the forest.
Explore themed areas like “Owl’s Forest,” where you can buy owl-themed products, or “Glass House,” offering ice and snowflake-themed items.
Visit “Chuchu’s House,” a cozy coffee shop, and “Paperwork House,” which sells handmade postcards. You can also create your own items, with candle making, instrument crafting, and paper crafts being particularly popular.
As night falls, the log houses and walkways are beautifully illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere. While you don’t need to stay overnight to enjoy this area, the hotel is highly recommended, complete with hot springs for relaxation after your adventures.
- Furano Cheese Craft Center - A paradise for cheese enthusiasts! The cheese here is crafted from the milk of cows raised in Furano’s great outdoors. You can watch the cheese-making process through glass windows.
On the second floor, explore the history of cheese production and the tools used. Experience milking a large mechanical cow and learn more about cheese in an engaging way.
Witness the creation of cheese gelato and other homemade gelatos like pumpkin and sugar cane. Discover rare cheese varieties such as “Furano wine” and “Onion,” along with their original butter.
You can also try making your own cheese, ice cream, or butter by reserving in advance. Enjoy this delightful experience with family or friends.
- Flower Land Kamifurano - These are Furano’s premier flower gardens. June to September is the ideal time to visit, as lupines, lavender, poppies, lilies, cosmos, marigolds, and sunflowers bloom in succession. The expansive gardens are perfect for strolling, or you can join the tractor bus tour, enjoyed by over 300,000 visitors annually.
Engage in activities like making lavender pillows or flower-pressed postcards, suitable for all ages. The landscape’s beauty varies with the seasons, featuring asparagus in May to June, melon in July to September, and corn in August to September. Savor the local cuisine, including all-you-can-eat potatoes and onions in the fall. Relish the gourmet delights and floral wonders of Hokkaido!
- Furano Wine Factory - Besides its lavender fame, Furano is renowned for its wine. Established in 1972, the “Furano City Grape Research Institute” focuses on cultivating the finest grape varieties and producing exceptional wine.
The region’s land and climate are naturally suited for grape cultivation, resulting in some of the finest wines produced here today.
At the red-brick wine factory, observe the production and fermentation processes. Of course, you can also sample the available wines. During grape blossom season, the area is beautifully illuminated. The shop offers a variety of wines, grape juice, and other gifts to take home.
- Shirogane Blue Pond - Experience the enchanting “blue world” created by nature at this “blue lake,” aptly named for its color. The blue hue results from aluminum from the Shirakane hot springs upstream, which, when struck by sunlight, scatters short blue wavelengths.
The view is most captivating on early sunny mornings, with pine trees enhancing the scenery. Over 1.5 million visitors come to witness this breathtaking sight each year. Winter light displays add to the allure. Enjoy nearby hot springs and the stunning views of the “blue lake” by day and night.
- Zerubunoka Atomunooka - Biei offers numerous flower garden areas, including this hill named after the last letters of “wind,” “scent,” and “play.” The theme is “to play surrounded by the lovely scent of the wind.”
Flower blooms begin in May and continue through early October, featuring lavender, sunflowers, poppies, and more. Explore these gardens on foot or by cart.
Nearby, discover the “Ken and Mary Tree,” famous from commercials. Don’t miss the restaurant, café, and unique gifts in the shop. Take a break from your drive here!
- Shirahige Falls - Named for its resemblance to a white beard, this waterfall drops approximately 30 meters and is a popular attraction in ‘Biei Shirogane Onsen Town.’ Here, you can closely observe underground water seeping from natural rocks and cascading into the mountain stream, creating the sparkling cobalt blue Biei River.
This waterfall is classified as a ‘submerged flow explosion,’ a rarity in Japan. The view from the bridge, known as the ‘Blue River,’ is highly recommended.
In winter, the contrast between the waterfall’s streaks, snow, and rock surface becomes more pronounced, with spray and steam creating fog and ice on the trees, enhancing the magical scenery.
- Shikisai no Oka - The panoramic flower gardens of Shikisai-no-oka offer breathtaking views across fifteen hectares of land in Oka-no-machi Biei. It’s a paradise of seasonal blossoms from spring to fall, with dozens of flower and grass species thriving. Come and enjoy the delightful fragrance of the blossoms amid stunning panoramic scenery.
