Additional Information

This Community Tour aims to uplift the lives of the slum dwellers, by 1) creating a conduit for them to achieve economic empowerment through income generated from these visits and 2) support the emotional well-being of slum dwellers by creating a platform where they can share stories, get encouragement, make new friends, and remove the stigma of HIV.

The tour guides are mothers who were born and brought up in Mathare, now taking care of their children and those left behind by their relatives or neighbors who died, got incarcerated or varnished without a trace. The women will welcome you to their houses to see how they live, care for those ravaged by the H.I.V scourge and other maladies, help you experience their daily life, share with you their gripping stories of how they ended up living in the slums as well how they cope with life. The security-guards are the reformed youths within the slums, who have become role models to others to stay away from the vices.

Unique Experience - If you're visiting Nairobi, even if only for a day, I absolutely recommend that you join this tour. It offers a unique opportunity to explore everyday life in Mathare and invites you to rethink your own. This incredible group of women opened their homes and hearts to us in a series of visits, through which we learned about their families, their struggles and their victories. Dr. John and Jijenge are on a deeply inspiring mission that should be discovered by more people. Thank you for the time and hospitality!

Amazing way to truly start to understand Nairobi - If you want to step out of the tourist track and actually get a glimps of what Nairobi is really about, this is the right place to go. The visit is eye-opening as much as it is hard to accept. The mothers and the kids from Jijenge lead you through their community with generosity and truth. It's an amazing, humble and human way of discovering the city, I'd strongly advise anyone to go without prejudice.

Eye-opening and Community Led Visit - I strongly recommend taking this tour provided by Dr. John and the Jijenge team. They know the area extremely well, and alongside this the tour is strongly led by residents within the community. it will help you understand new perspectives of situations in Mathare that you would be hard pressed to get access to elsewhere.

Safe and Eye-Opening! - Highly recommend you taking the time to visit the Mathare Slum. The Jijenge team knows the Mathare slum well and moreover, they are known by the community. During the tour, you will meet a variety of people who are all incrediblllllly friendly and who will really express to you what it is like to live in a slum. It is very safe along with the Jijenge team and it is well worth the time spent!

Inspirational and Enlightening - Nairobi is a fascinating dichotomy of haves and have nots and visiting Mathare makes these disparities very apparent. Dr. John puts together an exceptional tour of the neighborhood, which provides marginalized women the opportunity for marginalized HIV+ women within this community to share their stories and be heard. The importance of this work cannot be de-emphasized, particularly considering how Mathare is already neglected compared to its sister slum, Kibera. I would highly recommend this tour as an opportunity to better understand Kenya, Nairobi, and resilience.

Highly recommended - This is a unique opportunity to get to know people in the community and understand new perspectives. During the tour you get to speak with hard working women that are overcoming many hardships, yet continuing to thrive and give back to their communities! It is a moment of interaction that brings value to everyone. I highly recommend doing this if you are in Nairobi.

Scandalous! - crooks! I tried to contact the organization a day in advance, but there was no response via WhatsApp. On the day itself I also tried to make contact, but got nothing. I think it is outrageous, and do not advise anyone to book this tour. I had already paid for the full booking .....
