Mount Kenya - The journey begins in Naro Moru town, where the initial segment of the route leads you along a gravel road through farmlands for approximately 13km. All junctions are clearly marked, guiding you to the forest’s edge. Another 5km will take you to the park entry gate at 2400m, from which it’s an 8km trek to the roadhead and the Met Station Hut at 3000m, where you will spend the night to acclimatize.
Met Station - Mackinder’s Camp
Mount Kenya - On the second day, embark through the forest at around 3200m and proceed to Teleki Valley, reaching the moorland known as Vertical Bog. Expect this area to be quite boggy. At a ridge, the path splits into two options. You can choose the higher path, offering better views but often wet, or the lower path, which crosses the Naro Moru River and gently ascends to Mackinder’s Camp at 4200m. This segment of the trek typically takes about 4½ hours. Accommodation is available in dormitories or camping.
Summit Day (Mackinder’s Camp - Lenana and back to Met Station)
Mount Kenya - On the third day, you may either rest at Mackinder’s Camp to acclimatize or aim for Point Lenana at 4985m. This section takes three to six hours, so it is common to depart around 2am to reach the summit by sunrise. From the bunkhouse, continue past the ranger station to a fork. Keep right and traverse a swampy area, followed by a moraine, and then ascend a long scree slope – a challenging climb. The KWS Austrian Hut at 4790m is three to four hours from Mackinder’s and about an hour below the summit of Lenana, making it an ideal resting spot before the final ascent.
The trek from Austrian Hut to Point Lenana follows a narrow rocky path along the southwest ridge parallel to the Lewis Glacier, which has receded over 100m since the 1960s. Exercise caution, as the glacier’s shrinkage has increased the risk of slipping along the path. A final climb or scramble will bring you to the peak. Afterward, descend back to Mackinder’s for breakfast and continue to Met Station, with lunch along the way.
Met Station - Narumoro - Nairobi
Mount Kenya - After breakfast, descend through the rainforest to reach the gate, where our driver will meet you for the transfer back to Nairobi.
